EUROBAROMETER
- Barometers were born out the Eurobarometer
experience. Latinobarometer was financed by the
European Comission in its first 2 years for 4
countries ( 1995-6). It has grown into an 18
country study with an investment of only 400.000
US dollars. - We can expand comparative data across regions
from 70 to 104 of the 193 existing nations, if
we add the 34 countries surveyed by the EB. - GBS MODULE contains mainly EB items.
- For example, this is what we can have

11WHAT FOR?
- In order to expand global comprehension of
social phenomena - We could best understand democracies if we could
also know how developped democracies behave. - We know Sweden has done an enormous effort to
learn about how the world sees democratic europe. - But do we know how democratic is Europe in a
scientific comparative term? Does europe know how
democratic it is, compared to other regions of
the world? - Democracy is full of myths, this data dismantles
myths, and lets us work with reality in a
concrete way.
12WHY
- In order to understand European Public Opinion,
one must understand public opinion around the
world. - Globalization is not only a threat to Europeans
but also to other regions of the world. - Latinamerica knows europe through football, food,
and monuments, English football, Italian food,
French monuments, as the report for the Council
of Europe we did in 2004 shows. - How much do european governments invest in
communicating about their nations, and how much
do they achieve?
13HOW
- We propose
- 1. BI ANNUAL MODULE APLICATION
- 2. COMPILATION OF 104 COUNTRY DATA SET WITH
GLOBAL MODULE. - This data set can be uploaded into the
Globalbarometer web page, in our interactive
online system, and so the Eurobarometer would
become a further member of the network. - In exchange the European Union would profit from
the existing data from 6 regions of the world.
Surveys that have an investment of over 7 million
US dollars per wave.
14Concluding Remarks
- It has taken 15 years to come to this point.
- We know there is scepticism with respect to the
association with other less developped parts of
the world. - We know this is more a political than a technical
desition. - We invite you to learn about us and accept our
proposal to join efforts in expanding global
comprehension of social phenomena. - These are no doubt the alternative indicators
leaders like Sarkosi are looking for, that
integrate the economic, social,and political
dimension of development.
