Title: So that we May learn'''

1
So that we May learn...
2
Jesus has been teaching in different ways
He spoke about
1. The Kingdom of heaven
2. The love towards the sinners
3. Our own individual work
Now he wants to talk to us about something really
important
3
"The friend at midnight"
4
Prayer...
5
1Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a
certain place, when He ceased, that one of His
disciples said to Him, Lord, teach us to pray,
as John also taught his disciples. 2So He said
to them, When you pray, say Our Father in
heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come.
Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
3Give us day by day our daily bread. 4And forgive
us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is
indebted to us. And do not lead us into
temptation, But deliver us from the evil
one.5And He said to them, Which of you shall
have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say
to him, Friend, lend me three loaves 6for a
friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and
I have nothing to set before him 7and he will
answer from within and say, Do not trouble me
the door is now shut, and my children are with me
in bed I cannot rise and give to you? 8I say
to you, though he will not rise and give to him
because he is his friend, yet because of his
persistence he will rise and give him as many as
he needs. 9So I say to you, ask, and it will be
given to you seek, and you will find knock, and
it will be opened to you. 10For everyone who
asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him
who knocks it will be opened. 11If a son asks
for bread from any father among you, will he give
him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he
give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12Or if he
asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
13If you then, being evil, know how to give good
gifts to your children, how much more will your
heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who
ask Him!
Luke 111-13.
6
Let's start by noticing first...
A disciple saw Jesus praying and he felt the
desire to learn how to pray.
Luke 131... 1Now it came to pass, as He was
praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that
one of His disciples said to Him, Lord, teach us
to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
7
Did Jesus Pray?
Lets See what the Bible says
Jesus prayed very early in the morning
Mark 135... 35 Now in the morning, having risen
a long while before daylight, He went out and
departed to a solitary place and there He
prayed.
8
Other times he would go to the desert.
Luke 516... 16 So He Himself often withdrew
into the wilderness and prayed.
9
Before choosing the disciples he prayed all night.
Luke 612-13... 12Now it came to pass in those
days that He went out to the mountain to pray,
and continued all night in prayer to God. 13And
when it was day, He called His disciples to
Himself and from them He chose twelve whom He
also named apostles
10
His most precious prayer
17 - John
11
Matthew 2636,41
36Then Jesus came with them to a place called
Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, Sit here
while I go and pray over there. 37And He took
with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and
He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.
38Then He said to them, My soul is exceedingly
sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch
with Me.
Gethsemane
12
Before dying, he also prayed.
Matthew 2746...
Luke 2334,46...
13
Jesus was an example in prayer.
Luke 111b... Lord, teach us to pray, as John
also taught his disciples.
How does Jesus answer?
14
Let's see...
The SO-called, model prayer
Luke 112-4... 2So He said to them, When you
pray, say Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your
name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On
earth as it is in heaven. 3Give us day by day our
daily bread. 4And forgive us our sins, For we
also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And
do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us
from the evil one.
15
The words "then you say"
These words are telling us that what Jesus is
saying is only an example on how to pray.
Praying must be simple...
Matthew 69 In this manner, therefore, pray
Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
God won't listen to anybody that uses vain words.
Matthew 67-8...And when you pray, do not use
vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they
think that they will be heard for their many
words. 8Therefore do not be like them. For your
Father knows the things you have need of before
you ask Him.
16
What to ask for?
1. Always give reverence to his name.
Luke.112
2. Pray so that the Kingdom may grow.
Luke.112
3. Pray for physical needs.
Luke.113
4. Pray for the forgiveness of sins.
Luke.114
5. So that he can keep us out of temptation.
Luke.114
17
In Matthew 614,15 the principal focus of Jesus
was
To forgive others...
But in Luke the teaching is
persistence!
18
The parable...
Luke 115... And He said to them, Which of you
shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight
and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves
How many times have you been in this situation?
19
In many countries this is normal...
Neighbors know each other and are often
considered friends.
20
Luke 117... And he will answer from within and
say, 'Do not trouble me the door is now shut,
and my children are with me in bed I cannot rise
and give to you'?
In the middle eastern countries this is very
common.
21
Luke 118... I say to you, though he will not
rise and give to him because he is his friend,
yet because of his persistence he will rise and
give him as many as he needs.
persistence
22
JESUS' APPLICATION OF THE PARABLE
THE IMPORTANCE OF PERSISTENCE
Luke 11 9,10... "So I say to you, ask, and it
will be given to you seek, and you will find
knock, and it will be opened to you. For
everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks
finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
What Jesus wants from us, is for us to be like
this man.
23
Jesus said that only those who
Ask...
Everything starts by asking...
24
Jesus said that only those who
Seek...
Then comes the desire to seek.
25
Jesus said that only those who
Knock
When we ask, seek, and knock, that is when
26
We find.
Luke 119... ask, and it will be given to you
seek, and you will find knock, and it will be
opened to you.
27
Failure to be persistent, is the cause of many
prayers going unanswered...
We need to keep in mind
28
To whom we are asking.
Luke.1111-13
To encourage us, Jesus gives us the next
comparison
Luke 11 11-13... If a son asks for bread from
any father among you, will he give him a stone?
Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a
serpent instead of a fish? 12Or if he asks for
an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
three common things
29
Bread - Stone.
Fish - Snake.
Egg - Scorpion.
30
Jesus' conclusion
Luke 1113... If you then, being evil, know how
to give good gifts to your children, how much
more will your heavenly Father give the Holy
Spirit to those who ask Him!
How much more will your heavenly Father give?
31
Jesus says that if we persist God will give us
anything.
Even the Holy Spirit.
In what way?
Jn.737,38 Act.238,39
32
How many times per day do you pray, brother?
We already saw Jesus example.
One two or three times?
Daniel prayed three times a day.
Daniel 610
Elijah did too.
James 517
33
Are we persistent in prayer?
Do we pray so that God can give us his blessings?
