Title: Unit 3 Security

Unit 3 Security
  • Text A
  • The Land of the Lock

2
Introduction---Crime Prevention
  • In Britain, many people organize Neighborhood
Watch groups to try to prevent crimes.
Neighborhood Watch is an arrangement by
neighborhood people to watch each others houses
and report to police if there is anything
suspicious. But many other people dont like the
idea of being watched by neighbors.

3
  • In American, security has become a growing
concern and crime rate is soaring. Many community
service organizations and public organs provide
suggestions and services to help people when they
are on vacation. Police department also serves as
peoples consultant by teaching some safety tips
    to people.
  • By the way, can you find some safety tips at
    the gate of this building?

4
Warming-up Questions
  • Discuss the following two questions for 10
    minutes.
  • What do you think has led to deterioration (??)
    in security in the US?
  • ---the firearm administration the peoples
security ideas maybe the racial discrimination
  • Is there a similar problem in China today? If so,
what can be done to better the situation?

5
Summary
  • The text, by providing many examples,
describes, the wide use of security devices,
typically locks in varied forms in America. The
author, by comparing with the past era of leaving
the front door on the latch, regrets that people
no longer trust each other and have to resort to
elaborate security systems to protect themselves
and their possessions. And this has led to the
fact that people may have locked the evils out,
but they also have locked themselves in.

6
Structure Analysis
  • This exposition deals with security problem in
modern society. The text falls into three parts
  • Part I (para.13)
  • The era of on the latch has passed.
  • Part II (para.415) People employ different
    ways to protect themselves.
  • Part III ( para. 1619) The ways people employ
has also lock peoples soul in the name of
    security.

7
Writing Style
  • This text is an exposition. Making contrast and
showing examples are much used in our text.
  • In order to reflect the changes taken place
between the past and the present, the author
    skillfully employs comparison and contrast
throughout the article, which can be found in
    Para.1 vs Para. 4, Para. 10 vs Para. 11, Para. 12
vs Para. 13, with the first pair acting as the
opening of the text, and the

8
  • latter two as the supporting details for the
    central argument.
  • It is noticeable that the author achieves
cohesion throughout the article by no devices
other than a subtle tense change, without
explicit words like in the past or at
present to indicate the time and comparison. He
freely swifts between the past and the present,
yet does not produce any disorder and confusion,
which reflects the skillfulness of the writer.

9
  • The last part of the text (para.16---19) is
especially well-written with many forceful short
sentences. In the part, the author concisely
points out that the Americans are bathed in
distrust and fear, they have to resort to
elaborate security systems, particularly locks to
protect themselves, thus turning the America into
the land of the lock. Yet in doing so, they
have meanwhile pitifully become the prisoners of
    themselves.

  • (1) Criticism and self-criticism is necessary in
that it helps us to find and correct our mistakes.

  • (3) The new machine will work twice as fast, thus
    greatly reducing costs.
  • (4) Due to the fact that all the trains were
delayed, the station was crowded with people.
  • (5) Computer vandals can cause real damages. As a
consequent/ as a result, the public is taking a
serious look at the security of computer systems.

my English learning since I went to university.
Therefore, I have a good English language
education and I am confident that I can master
    the language well gradually.
  • (7) The Eskimo language is one of the most
difficult in the world to learn, with the result
that almost no traders or explorers have even
    tried to learn it. Consequently/Accordingly,
there has grown up a jargon (??) similar to the
    pidgin English used in China.

  • (8) Born and bred in the city, we cannot see any
wild animals, and the program just compensates
for it. It provides us with natural scenes and
the life of all kinds of wild animals with the
explanation of the narrator. We also learn some
knowledge about animals, even some plants. So, in
my opinion, it is an interesting as well as
    instructive program.

23
  • College English Teaching in China
  • Nowadays, there are more and more people
complaining that English teaching at college is a
    complete failure. After four-year English
    learning, most graduates cant properly
communicate with foreigners, nor can they
translate between languages, let alone write in
English. Where do the problems lie?
  • To some extent, I think, it is reasonable for
those people to say so. To begin with, English
teaching at college is, in a large degree,
    teacher-centered.

24
  • It is still not uncommon in the classroom that
the teacher explains every language point in
detail, while students take notes at times.
Secondly, culture is neglected in English
teaching because of poor text design. With a
great deal of grammar and structure exercises in
the textbook, students are misled into memorizing
a large vocabulary and a lot of English rules.
Few students know how, when and where to use them
properly. Finally, test-oriented education, in a
sense, misleads and impedes college English
teaching in China. For instance, college English
    Test Band Four / Six

25
  • is so overemphasized in some colleges that
teachers strive to meet the needs of the test,
sacrificing learning for the sake of test
results, and students only learn how to pass the
    examination.
  • In conclusion, Chinese college English teaching
is to be reformed. English teaching should be
student-centered, culture should be introduced in
language teaching, and textbooks should be well
designed to arouse students interest in learning
    to communicate in English.

mail, and the ability to access information in
    remote database.

vegetables, for they were freshly picked this
    morning.
  • Several years later when you look back on these
days spent here, you will always regard it as the
    most precious experience.

30
  • After Spring Festival a lot of migrant workers
  • wandered from town to town looking for a job.
  • Some people think crime will be going up with
more and more people having guns, while others
    just hold the opposite view.
  • Oral Practice (P. 100)
  • ??????????????????????????
  • The following are suggested ideas

31
  • Why We Are For Gun Control
  • The argument about gun control has never
stopped. Some people contend that gun control of
the government was an excess restriction of
citizen liberty. But in my opinion, it is very
necessary in our country at this time.
  • Firstly, in terms of bating crimes, strict
control of gun can decrease gun crimes and is
beneficial to social stability. The practices of
gun control in our country were efficient in the
past several years and the number of violent

32
  • crimes that have something to do with gun went
    down considerably. Recently, our police
department has uncovered a big case associated
with illegal gun manufacturing in Jiaozuo of
Henan Province, finding out over 3,000 illegally
manufactured guns and eliminating a serious
latent danger of society. Then, strict gun control
can also effectively prevent the policemen from
gun abuse, so that citizens' rights will be
    protected better.

33
  • Moreover, these years, in several countries
whose gun control was very lax, the shooting
affairs in school happened more and more
frequently. It is a red alarm.
  • In a word, we should support the government in
gun control. It is good for the whole society.

    ,????????????????????????????????????,????????????
    ?????????????????????????????,?????????????????,??
    ?????????????????,???????,????????????????????????
    ???????????????????????

36
  • Statistics show that both cities and rural
areas are vulnerable to criminals like burglars
and robbers. Now the crimes are still rising,
though not dramatically. Therefore, policemen and
security guards play an important role in
maintaining public order and security. Policemen
tend to track down criminals day and night
without so much as a rest. People are often
surprised it the efficiency of breaking cases on
the part of the police force.

37
  • For example, the police can catch the criminal
in three days through the information center
hooked up to the police stations in all the
regions of a city. In addition, residents have
favorable opinion of responsible security guards.
For instance, when people make decisions on where
to buy a house, one of their considerations is
whether the community is under the surveillance
of devoted guards. Policemen and security guards
are the guardians of peace in the modern
    civilized society.
