    particular importance to novice drivers.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of
death for teens in Kentucky.

Leading Causes for Teen Crashes
  • Lack of awareness to the consequences of risk-
    taking behavior
  • Inexperience with complexities of driving
  • Peers in vehicle with the teen driver and other
    distractions
  • Impaired driving due to road conditions,
    including driving at night
  • Speeding
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Goals and Objectives
  • Decrease fatalities and injuries among teens.
  • Increase the driving skills of licensed teen
    drivers, while stressing the importance of injury
    prevention.
  • Provide an opportunity for hands-on-learning.
  • Form a partnership with teens across Kentucky to
    support traffic safety initiatives.

Strategies and Activities
  • One week of training at the Kentucky State Police
    Academy.
  • Two days of classroom presentations and
    discussions.
  • Three days of hands-on driving instruction in
    actual motor vehicle situations at the Kentucky
    Speedway in Sparta.

Student Eligibility Requirements
  • 16 years of age or older
  • Licensed driver (at time of application)
  • Signed liability release
  • Highly motivated
  • Communication skills
  • Enthusiasm
  • Leadership traits
  • Time Commitment (must be able to complete entire
    week of training)

Student Selection
  • High School students are selected from
    throughout Kentucky based on identified teen
    crash data and low safety belt usage.

Curriculum
  • Vehicle dynamics and skid control
  • Safety belts and airbags
  • Evasive maneuver
  • Controlled braking
  • Multiple turns
  • Lane interchange
  • Impaired driving

  • Kentucky, like many states, has experienced
    an over-representation of drivers aged 16-19
    involved in crashes, especially fatal crashes
    involving non-safety belt use and impaired
    driving.

  • Drivers aged 16-19 account for 20 of all
    collisions.
  • 21 of all injury collisions.
  • 16 of all fatal collisions
  • While making up only 6 of the licensed drivers
    in Kentucky.

  • The Kentucky State Police Academys certified
    driving instructors will guide the students
    through a variety of obstacles, while coaching
    them on the correct way to respond with a vehicle.
