Important Facts

• Each state has Electors equal to the number of
  its US Senators 1
• Whichever candidate wins the popular vote in a
  state wins all the Electoral votes of that state.
• The candidate with the most electoral votes, and
  a majority of Electoral votes wins the
  Presidency.
• If no candidate wins a majority, the President is
  elected by a vote in the House of Representatives.

Arguments for and Against the Electoral System

• Against
• A candidate could lose the popular election but
  win the Presidency.
• Voters in rural states are over represented.
• Each states electoral votes are winner take
  all rather than divided by the popular vote in a
  state.

• For
• It was established that way in the Constitution.
• A straight popular election would lead to a win
  on media presentation rather than issues.

• Is the Electoral College system the best way to
  elect the President? Why or why not?
• Using the map of slide three, plan a campaign
  schedule for your candidate, helping him to win a
  majority of the Electoral votes, but traveling to
  the fewest number of states possible.
