2
Introduction
  • The Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated
    Investigations (FOCI) is an interdisciplinary
program seeking to understand the influence of
the environment on commercially valuable fish and
    shellfish stocks in Alaskan waters.
  • FOCI scientists need a system that will enable
them to effectively collaborate despite their
    geographical separation.
  • To meet these needs we have chosen to enhance the
    existing OceanShare/Climate Data Portal software
and develop the Secure Document Repository (SDR).

3
OceanShare
  • Interactive and collaborative environment for
    data exploration
  • Uniform access to multiple geographically
    distributed data archives
  • Interactive Java graphics
  • Integration of data from local and remote data
    archives
  • Interactive annotation of data
  • Highlight individual plots
  • add text, arrows, lines, etc
  • User interaction with the data
  • Dynamic query of data values and metadata
  • Graphics zoom capability with automatic rescaling
    of axes

OceanShare Design
5
Climate Data Portal
  • Objective
  • Unified, networked access to geographically
distributed data from Observing Systems and
Historical Data Archives (focus on in situ data)
  • Method
  • Integrate several new, modern and proven,
    off-the-shelf network-based applications and
    technology developments
  • CORBA Data Server
  • Interactive, Java Scientific Graphics Toolkit
  • Interactive Java tools selecting data from large
in situ data collections ndEdit Java utility
  • LDAP Directory Services
  • XML Automated metadata generation tool

6
CDP in situ Data Collections
  • Data presently available
  • TAO El Nino buoy data (realtime) PMEL
  • Global sea level data (realtime) University of
    Hawaii
  • Global Temperature-Salinity Profile Program
    (GTSPP) NODC
  • PMEL hydrographic data collection PMEL
  • World Ocean Database 1998 NODC/PMEL

7
Design Goals
  • Enhance OceanShare
  • Integrate ndEdit data selection tool
  • Implement textual and graphical annotation tools
  • Extend data handling to include time series and
    gridded data
  • Implement session save and restore.
  • Secure location to share documents, data, images,
    and collaborative sessions.
  • Access control by individual document and/or
    folder
  • Easy administration of privileges
  • Document version control

8
Approach
Use software components and infrastructure
available from previous development efforts and
the open source community
  • Climate Data Portal
  • ndEdit data selection tool
  • Climate data servers
  • Distributed data via objects
  • OceanShare collaborative application
  • SGT flexible and interactive graphics
  • Jakarta Project http based servers

9
Secure Document Repository (SDR)
  • Uses industry standard WebDAV protocol
  • Custom Java applications to down/up load
    documents and set file/directory protections
  • Commercial applications available to access
    WebDAV repository
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0
  • MacOS X
  • Dreamweaver
  • Adobe Acrobat 5
  • Microsoft Office 2000

10
SDR Design
11
Technologies Utilized
  • Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)
  • Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA)
  • Java language
  • Habanero collaborative framework
  • Tomcat servlet container
  • Slide content management framework
  • Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning
    (WebDAV)

12
NOAA/PMEL Technologies Utilized
  • NOAAServer
  • OceanShare
  • Scientific Graphics Toolkit (SGT)
  • EPIC Management, display, and analysis of
    geophysical data.
  • Climate Data Portal (CDP)

13
Future Directions
  • Implement document version control when available
    in Jakarta-Slide
  • Data analysis capabilities added to OceanShare
  • Project management (e.g. time line, task flow)
  • Instrumentation access
  • Advanced visualizations (e.g. VRML, area and
    contour plotting, GIS maps)
