Title: Geophysics Special Interest Group SIG Assessment Work Group
1Geophysics Special Interest Group
(SIG)Assessment Work Group
- Open Meeting, Mumbai,
- Wednesday 28 November 2007
2Agenda - 1
3Agenda - 2
4Geophysical Standards Assessment Work Group
Meeting Objectives
5Proposed Meeting Objectives
- Present Draft Geophysical Standards Road Map and
set the Assessment in that context - Propose process and plan for Geophysics SIG and
Assessment - reference WITSML and PRODML
- Receive additional Standards Opportunities from
Indian participants - Obtain good indication of Indian commitment to
participate in Assessment - Others???

Geophysics Standards Road Map
7Geophysics Standards Road Map
- What is the present situation?
- Who are the active players in Gp standard
setting, and what are they doing? - What are the drivers which will determine the
future of geophysical technologies? - What are the possible approaches to be taken?
8Present Situation - 1
- Seismic technologies have evolved enormously over
the last decades - Acquisition 3D, 4D, and OBC,
- Processing Pre-stack Depth Migration, Cluster
computing, ... - Data transfer specifications being modernised by
SEG, Canadian SEG, OGP, and others SEG-D 2.0
3.0 - Interpretation Interpretation Work Stations,
Visualisation, - New technologies likely to impact operations in
near future - Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems, Solid-state
storage, GPS Lidar (Light Detection and
Ranging), Wi-Fi (Wireless networking)
9Drivers for Geophysical Standards
- Expanding Uses of Geophysics
- More Exploration in mature and immature regions
- Applications in Field Development
- Applications in Smart Fields
- Optimising current techniques
- New techniques and technologies
- Increasing Data Volumes to be managed
- Various proprietary solutions already
proliferating - All of which want the job done faster, better,
with reduced cost, risk and uncertainty.
10Present Situation - 2
- We have a starting list of Opportunities from
ONGC and other Indian EP Players - These are from across the entire API
(Acquisition, Processing, Interpretation) life
cycle of geophysical data - Some of these must be refined and used to
- Evolve and test our assessment process
- Promote and sell participation globally, beyond
India
11Where do we need to aim?
- It is possible to envisage a spectrum of targets,
ranging from piecemeal vocabularies for
(SEG-style) Header or Trailer files, to loose
coupled work-flow integration, possibly
web-based. - It is for the Assessment Work Group to decide
where in this spectrum we select our target(s) - Our guiding lights must include
- Providing Real Business Value to users and
customers of Geophysics - Establishing and adhering to relevant criteria on
which to base our selections - Providing specifications that can evolve to
accommodate interoperability and technological
change over at least one decade - Planning to produce, pilot and test a few initial
proposals - Others???
12Proposed Road Map for 2008
- Energistics Geophysics SIG
- Assessment Work Group gets global support,
evaluates and proposes for development Short
(2?) and Long (15?) lists of opportunities
for 2008 through 2012 - Subsequent Work Group(s) obtain resources,
produce and test pilot implementation(s) - Promote success, deploy and show benefit from
standards - Seek continuation on Long opportunities and/or
in directions arising out of 2008 work - Other Geophysical Standards setting
organisations - Maintain awareness of and leverage concurrent
efforts by SEG, OGP, and others
13Road Map for 2009 and beyond
- Continue approaches and activities as business
needs and value determine - Select 2 or 3 Opportunities for development,
piloting and deployment each year
14A Challenge and an Analogy
- Energistics has to evaluate its investment
opportunities to ensure it gets value from them - Just as oil companies evaluate acreage and assets
in exploration, appraisal and development stages,
in order to preserve existing, and create new
value - Success will be the extent to which the
Geophysical community will support this
initiative and derive business benefit from using
our results

25Caveat
- We have an idea of some starting points
- BUT we do not yet know where the assessment will
take us - THEREFORE a degree of Flexibility or Agility will
be necessary for us to succeed - Traditional project management techniques may not
be appropriate to this Assessment Work Group
