- WAY TO GO!
10How Does BISAC Work?
- Make a recommendation via email to
- leslie.mosher_at_zondervan.com (ECPA
Representative) - harbisc_at_btol.com (Connie Harbison, BISG
Chairwoman) - Attend the monthly BISG meeting
- Obtain BISG committee approval
- Minimum 100 book rule
- Subject based
- Another appropriate category is not available
- Obtain BISAC board approval
- Collect for next list release
- Goal annual updates
11The BISG Meeting
- If we give this code to you, we have to give it
to every religion. - These are subject codes and Bible study guides
are not subjects. - Christianity is not the main subject of the
book. - These are subject codes and gift books are not
subjects. - Use merchandising themes.
- Use merchandising themes.
- Lets do some research on that.
- and finally, Approved.

13BISAC Sub List
VERY IMPORTANT
- The sub list is a small group of codes (120)
selected from the complete BISAC list (3,000). - We previously agreed to use a sub list for one
year to evaluate the impact on data systems. - What if you dont want the product shelved in the
Christian section? - To maintain the benefits of the current category
structure - First use a category from the sub list.
- Second use a category from the complete BISAC
list. Print the second category on the product.
14BISAC Code General Implementation Guide
- Two important modifications from the CPC
Implementation Guide. - Visual Use upper and lower case
- RELIGION / Christian Life / Spiritual Growth
- Multiple categories
- Always select from the Christian industry sub
list first - If desired, add a second category from the
complete BISAC list. - RELIGION / Christian Life / Family
- FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS / Parenting / Motherhood
15BISAC Code General Implementation Guide
16CPC / BISAC Map
- Represents the BISAC codes to which current CPC
codes can be mapped. - There are so many new codes that it would be best
to reevaluate each title rather than use an
actual data map. For example - CPC Christian Living / Practical Life / Diets
Health - BISAC HEALTH FITNESS / Healthy Living
- BISAC HEALTH FITNESS / Diets
17CPC / BISAC Map
- Some codes do not have a match. These codes need
to be manually evaluated. For example - General Interest / Seasonal / Mothers Day
- Church Ministry / Church Life / Program
Resources - Gift books
- Most gift books should be listed as REGLION /
Christian Life / Inspiration - Some gift books need to move to the CPC Gift
Category list. - Journals, calendars, baby books, albums,
weddings
18BISAC Merchandising Themes
- What are they?
- Frequently requested topics for special store
merchandising - Examples Graduation, Mothers Day
- Who uses them?
- Publishers, retailers, online consumers
- How are they transmitted?
- ONIX data feeds
- When are they available?
- Immediately
- Published on the BISG website at
http//www.bisg.org/bisac/subjectcodes/index.html
- Why use them?
- If all ECPA publishers use Merchandising Themes,
then our industry can identify, retrieve, and
analyze industry data.
19BISAC Merchandising Theme General Implementation
Guide
- Use TP028 TOPICAL / Christian Interest as the
first theme. - Select multiple themes if appropriate.
- Select the theme at the same time as selecting
the BISAC code. - Note The implementation guide is an ECPA
recommendation, not a BISG requirement.
20BISAC Merchandising Themes
- Merchandising themes are not a substitute for
subject matter. - They are not visible to the consumer.
- They are not printed on the product.
- If used as outlined, they will aid when analyzing
data.
