2As the result of the 2003 JCI-UN Leadership
Summit held at UN Headquarters in New York, JCI
took over the responsibility to contribute to
the efforts of UN and presented a resolution
supporting the UN Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs), which is the main program put into
practice by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

3What are the UN Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs) for ?
- The MDGs commit the international community to an
expanded vision of development, one that
vigorously promotes human development as the key
to sustaining social and economic progress in all
countries, and recognizes the importance of
creating a global partnership for development. - The goals have been commonly accepted as a
framework for measuring development progress. - The eight MDGs are
- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- Achieve universal primary education
- Promote gender equality and empower women
- Reduce child mortality
- Improve maternal health
- Combat HIV-aids, malaria and other diseases
- Ensure environmental sustainability
- Develop a global partnership for development

Based on the 2004 JCI-UN Leadership Summit, JCI
will focus on the promotion of the following MDGs
from 2005 onwards
- Africa and Middle East
- MDG 1 (Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger)Â
- MDG 6 (Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other
diseases) - Asia/Pacific
- MDG 1 (Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger)
- Americas
- MDG 4 (Reduce child mortality)
- MDG 8 (Develop a global partnership for

- MDG 1 Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- Africa Middle East / Asia Pacific
- Target 1 Halve, by 2015, the proportion of
people whose income is less than 1 a day - Target 2 Halve, by 2015, the proportion of
people who suffer from hunger. - MDG 4 Reduce child mortality
- Americas
- Target Reduce by two-thirds, by 2015, the
under-five mortality rate.

- Target 1 Have halted by 2015 and begun to
reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS - Target 2 Have halted by 2015 and begun to

- Target 1 Develop further an open, rule-based,
predictable, nondiscriminatory trading and
financial system (includes a commitment to good
governance, development, and poverty
reductionboth nationally and internationally)

- Target 2 Address the special needs of the least
developed countries (includes tariff-and
quota-free access for exports, enhanced program
of debt relief for heavily indebted poor
countries, cancellation of official bilateral

assistance for countries committed to poverty
reduction) - Target 3 Address the special needs of landlocked
countries and small island developing states
(through the Program of Action for the
Sustainable Development of Small Island
Developing States) - Target 4 Deal comprehensively with the debt
problems of developing countries through national
and international measures in order to make debt
sustainable in the long term

countries, develop and implement strategies for
decent and productive work for youth - Target 6 In cooperation with pharmaceutical

make available the benefits of new technologies,
especially information and communications.
