2
What is Ulrich's Serials Analysis System?
  • Ulrich's Serials Analysis System is a powerful
tool for professionals who need to identify,
analyse, evaluate and create reports about their
    print and electronic serials holdings.
  • Ulrich's Serials Analysis System provides serials
    librarians, acquisitions and subject specialists,
    collection managers, electronic resource
librarians, and other librarians, as well as
    serials publishing professionals, with detailed
information on the print and electronic serials
they have -- and don't have.

3
With Ulrich's Serials Analysis System, you have
the tools you need to
  • Identify gaps and redundancies in your serials
    collection.
  • Compare your collection against the Ulrich's
universe of serials or a select core of titles,
groups of peer libraries, or your consortium's
    catalogue.
  • Evaluate your print and electronic holdings using
    industry benchmarks and quantitative data.
  • Analyze the offerings of top serials publishers
    and other vendors.
  • Create downloadable reports about your serials
collection by subject category and key criteria.

4
Ulrich's Serials Analysis System helps you
answer key questions
  • What do we have?
  • What do we need?
  • What else is out there, and how good is it?
  • Does my collection have the best content for my
    library's users?
  • How does my collection compare with others?

5
Accessing Ulrichs Serials Analysis System

be the easiest format to use. Simple save your
    workbook in the appropriate format
  • Pipe Delimited Text
  • Depending on where you get your file from, it
might be in pipe delimited format (pipe ).
  • Note These formats are described in detail in

Generating Statistics
  • Post-Processing
  • After clicking submit your file will undergo
    post-processing
  • Post-Processing is one of the most important
steps in the process to analyzing your data
  • It queries Ulrichs Periodical Directory for
every ISSN on your list and pulls back valuable
data and creates direct links between your list
    and Ulrichs Web
  • It creates a list of non-match items, which we
recommend you resolve before starting any
analysis. It is for this report that you have
uploaded Journal Titles, as it will make working
    with the list easier

21
Post-Processing can take a while, however as it
runs in the background it is OK to do something
else in the meantime
22
Ulrichs Web is updated weekly and this may
affect the statistics you run in USAS. Should you
wish to update the Stats go to Edit and follow
onscreen instructions
Once Post-Processing has completed you will see
todays date here followed by (Available).
23
Your list data has been enriched with Ulrichs
Periodical Directory Data and is ready for
analysis. However, before working with this list,
we recommend resolving as many non-match items as
possible
24
(No Transcript)
25
Your original list might have contained duplicate
ISSNs -
The second type of report you get from this list
is the non-match items report. It is important to
resolve as many of these as possible as it will
improve the information the data analysis or a
comparison offers later
26
ISSN Non-Match The ISSN cant be found in
Ulrichs Web. Do a title search and try to find
the ISSN. Alternatively verify the ISSN from an
independent source.
Invalid ISSN Something is add odds with the ISSN,
it might be incomplete, there might be a typo,
check them and try to verify
Mergers and Acquisitions This title merged with
another title, check out Ulrichs Web to find
details, check your holdings and correct if
possible.
Title History ISSN of xxxx-xxxx This ISSN isnt
up to date, check your holdings, possibly correct
them and then correct the data in USAS
Ceased According to our information this journal
is no longer being published again check your
records
27
Once youve worked through your list and have the
corrections at hand, you can simple browse to the
journal and click edit to correct the entry
28
Should you have to delete an item, select the
check box next to it and use the drop down box to
delete it.
29
This list offers a great variety of sorting
option, simply click on the column heading to
resort your list. You can also use the search box
to quickly jump to a specific journal
It is also a great place to quickly view a record
in Ulrichs Web. Simply click on Journal Title
and you will be taken to the appropriate record
for in-depth, comprehensive, and unbiased
information

34
Lets compare one list to Ulrichs Core
35
Select your library
36
At any step of your analysis you can download the
table you are looking at as an Excel file to
report and share this information
You will notice that the total for your library
list count will have changed to reflect the
criteria Ulrichs Core
37
This comparison is looking at absolutely every
subject area (900) available from the Ulrichs
Periodical Directory, whether you have holdings
or not. Thus you might want to limit the view to
narrow down your comparison appropriately. For
example to avoid clutter, a popular selection is
List Matches only. However this is also the
place where you can start to drill down to a very
detailed level to analyze your holdings or obtain
pointers for acquisition that are tailor made and
appropriate for your library. e.g. look for
Refereed Journals, that have an ISI Impact
Factor, were reviewed by the Magazines for
Libraries, and published in the United Kingdom.
38
At the bottom of the list, you will be reminded,
if items from your original list werent included
in the statistics. You really should work through
these to avoid the results of your analysis being
skewed or incomplete
39
Most of the subject areas you see here are high
level categories, by clicking on expand you will
see how this upper level subject category is
broken down in narrow level subject categories
for detailed analysis
Plus the number (listing) of journals that you do
not hold for further scrutiny by yourself
The number of titles you hold in this subject
area. By clicking on the number a new window will
open and show you those 12 journals. You can then
download this list for further reporting.
The total number of journals in Ulrichs Core for
this subject category, plus in the cell right
next to it the percentage figure, showing the
overlap.
If you were to click on the Subject Category a
new window will open and a search in Ulrichs Web
will be executed for all journals that have been
grouped under this subject category. There is one
important note to be made. For USAS only the main
subject category is used to avoid the same
journal showing up several times.

Narrow down your search to receive statistics,
that are more relevant to your decision making
process
43
Notice how the figures changed to reflect your
criteria and thus aid your decision making process
44

Comparing two lists of ISSNs
In this exercise, I want to compare my Print
holdings versus my Electronic journals, in order
to identify and review duplicates.
46
In this example, we are comparing our list of
our Print holdings Vs our Electronic holdings, in
order to identify duplicates.
And what is unique to each of those lists?
How many journals do these two lists have in
common? Click to see a report!
