Why a Radio Map???

• How many people actually know what the sky would
  look like if we could see radio wavelengths?
• A radio map enables us to demonstrate the
  differences of radio and visible light wavelengths

Important Differences Between Radio and Optical
Astronomy

• What is studied?
• Optical visible light of the electromagnetic
  spectrum
• wavelengths from 400nm (blue) to 700nm (red), the
  colors of the rainbow
• Radio radio wavelengths from 1mm to hundreds of
  meters

What Does it all Mean???

• What does radio astronomy actually involve?
• Radio astronomy involves studying the radio waves
  emitted from the Sun, Jupiter, other galaxies,
  supernova remnants, pulsars, quasars, and clouds
  of hydrogen in the galaxy.
