house tested positive for an illicit substance
(cf. 65.75 nationally) (within 48 hours of
arrest/detainment). - 77 females tested positive and 73 males tested

particularly for juvenile and adult females
(17 and 20 respectively, cf 15 adult males and

- The current economic conditions a great challenge
to ex-offenders exiting the prison system - Finding accommodation one of the greatest
challenges for them. - 28 properties scattered throughout the Perth
metropolitan area - Houses and units, fully furnished 3 months
accommodation at minimal rate. - Minimal rental rates which is inclusive of
utility charges.

- Limited Emergency accommodation.
- No transitional and long term accommodation
supports available as a through care model from
emergency accommodation. - Funding to employ more community case workers to
further support this marginalised group of people.

- Community Juvenile and Corrections Officers are
responsible for clients statutory requirements,
not welfare issues. - Who is?
- Minimal contact with clients that are
incarcerated.

- For the financial year 2006/07) 34 Department of
Child Protection Clients were incarcerated in
Juvenile custodial Centres due to a number of
welfare issues including lack of appropriate
accommodation. - This represents 17 of the total population in
the juvenile justice system. - With an average stay of 94 days in custody.
Average based on total amount of detainees
incarcerated.

Issues for these clients aged 13yrs 18yrs.
- Accommodation placement emergency, transitional
and long term. - Attributed to a number of reasons with two major
factors being - The reduction in child protection hostels and

Protection services and placement.
