• D-Star is a protocol definition, published by the
  JARL, defining digital communications
• D-Star is an open protocol
• Specifies only portions of system communications
  ex AMBE codec, GMSK modulation scheme
• Some specific implementations left to vendors
  ex radio to controller interface
