1Programs Changing Leaves Why do leaves change
color in the fall? Follow a leaf from beneath the
bud in winter to a mulch pile the following fall.
Caterpillars Trace the development of a
butterfly from an egg to an adult, using live
samples. We will read and act our parts from Eric
Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar"This
program is also available in Spanish.1. The
program begins with a reading of The Very Hungry
Caterpillar.2. We will then use live material
and video of the butterfly stages to supplement
the story, and compare the stages of butterflies
and moths.3. The lesson ends with students
acting out the stages of the butterfly.4. Time
is allowed for questions and answers.

2Slime Program
Students will learn about solids, liquids and
gases during class activity and experiments.
Students will be interactively involved in 2
experiments and 2 class activities during this
50 minute virtual field trip. At the end of the
event, students will have their own slime to
play with.

GLCE's for program Make purposeful observation
of the natural world using the appropriate
senses. (S.IP.00.11 S.IP.01.11) Manipulate
simple tools (for example hand lens, pencils,
balances, non-standard objects for measurement)
that aid observation and data collection.
(S.IP.00.14 S.IP.01.14) Matter exists in
several different states solids, liquids and
gases. Each state of matter has unique physical
properties. Gases are easily compressed but
liquids and solids do not compress easily.
Solids have their own particular shapes, but
liquids and gases take the shape of the

3Programs The French Voyageur - Relive a year in
the life of a French Voyageur as Jean-Paul
LeFranc guides your class from Montreal to the
Grand Portage in Minnesota and back. Students
will actively participate in the program with
learning the different duties men had within the
canoe, the food they ate, their unusual form of
dress, the purpose of the French Voyageurs, and
the purpose of their trip. Abraham Lincoln
Honest and Lucky - The 16th President makes a
special appearance in your class as he tells the
story of his life from childhood to death.
Sharing little known facts and first person
accounts about how he was honest and about how he
was lucky, you will feel that you have just met
the man in the tall hat and beard
personally ---and you did!

4Owls of Michigan With Pellet Dissection - Have a
hoot of a good time learning about the 10
species of owls in Michigan. See examples of each
owl, hear owl calls and learn their natural
history. Students will dissect an owl pellet to
see what their particular owl ate and match the
bones to an owl prey sheet.

Farm Animals This program is a general overview
of farm animals their habitat, characteristics
and uses on the farm
Animal Coverings All animals have varying
coverings to suit their environment. Observe the
differences in animal coverings from feathers to
fur as we look at the many different animals at
the Farm Learning Center.
Special Programs We will work with teachers to
develop programs that align with local school
curriculum or Grade Level Content Expectations.

6Programs Native American Beadwork See the
beautiful beadwork of the woodland Native
Americans and learn of the importance of beadwork
in their culture. Students will make their own
sumac bead necklace to keep as they journey to a
time where beads were used as currency. This
field trip is a perfect compliment to the Native
American state curriculum. Its Frog Time
Spend 45 minutes with a Hartley Naturalist
discovering Michigan Frogs. The session will
cover the frogs life cycle, how to identify our
local frogs, how to survey the local frog
population (s), and a close encounter with a
couple of live frogs.
