Title: Accelerated Reader AR

- Philipsburg-Osceola Area
- Senior High School
- Contact Mrs. Rebecca Kohute
- Senior High Librarian
2What isAccelerated Reader?
- AR is a reading practice program designed to
allow more personalized effective reading
choices based on students interests and
appropriate reading levels.
3Where Should I begin?
- Browse the shelves and select a book with a blue
label. (All Senior High Library Accelerated
Reader books have a blue label on the spine.) - Use the librarys electronic catalog to locate a
certain type of book (Ex. Family)
4Accelerated Reader Book Point Values
- Each book is worth a certain number of points
based on reading level word count. - Example Al Capone Does My Shirts has a reading
level of 3.5 (and the word count is 49509). Its
point value is 7. - Most quizzes have 10 questions (some have 20
questions).
Wonderful book!
5Accelerated Reader Book Point Values
- Reading levels and point values for each book can
be found - In the white binder in the library
- ONLINE on Mrs. Kohutes POSH
- Library Homework Central page.
6How Grading Works
- Students earn a percentage of the books point
value based on - A. Passing the quiz w/ a 60 or higher
- B. The number of correct answers
- Example A student answers 70 of the
questions correctly. The books point value is
7. The student earns 4.9 points out of 7 (or
70 of 7).
7How Grading Works
- A students AR grade counts for 1/5 of the
students total nine weeks grade. - A student needs to earn 20 points during each
marking period for a 100 score for AR. -
- Points over 20 do NOT carry over to the next
marking period.

9Taking a Quiz
- After reading the book, take the AR quiz on the
computer in the library. - Log into the AR program w/ a password
- Select the quiz title
- Mrs. Kohute then enters the monitor password.
10Security
- A student must have the book when he or she comes
to take the test. - Once logged into AR, the students name appears
in the upper left corner for verification. - Mrs. Kohute will enter the password for each test
taken. - Mrs. Kohute will be looking for anomalies. (Ex.
Ten students taking the same quiz in two days.) - A student may not retake quizzes.
- A student may take one quiz per day.
- Alternative quizzes have been created for books
made into movies. They are DETAILED.
11Academic Integrity
- Cheating will NOT be tolerated!!
- Some recent examples Another student giving
answers is cheating. Another student helping
a student to remember the book is cheating. - If a student is caught cheating, he/she will
receive a failing grade for AR (Thats a failing
score for 1/5 of the marking period grade.) - In addition, a discipline referral will be
written as this is a violation of the Academic
Integrity Policy in the student handbook. - See the Academic Integrity Policy in students
agendas for full details.
