Title: Accelerated Reading Procedures

1
Accelerated Reading Procedures
  • For 5th Grade Students

2
Assignment of Goals
  • Your teacher will assign you
  • A reading range
  • A book level goal
  • A point goal
  • all students must maintain 85 accuracy

3
Making Sure Your Book is AR
  • If you get your book from the library you should
be sure that it is an AR book.
  • If you get your book from home or your teachers
library you will need to check on the computer to
be sure that it is an AR book. At that time you
may want to make sure that you have not already
taken a test on that particular book.

4
Choosing a Book
  • You must make sure that the book you have chosen,
falls within the reading range written on your
    goal sheet.
  • If you are reading a non-fiction book you need to
remember that it is actually one grade level
higher than the level that is given in the book.
  • It is usually better to begin at the lower end of
your reading range and work to the upper end as
    you go.
  • Only with special permission from your teacher,
may you go higher than your reading range.

5
Before You Take the Test
  • To take a test you must have read your book.
  • If your book is a chapter book it is always
helpful to go back to the first few chapters and
refresh your memory of the beginning of the
    story.
  • If you are taking a test on a non-fiction book
you need to review all vocabulary words in the
    glossary.

6
Taking the Test
  • Once you are ready to take your test you need to
place your number on the strip.
  • When your number is at the top you may take your
    test.
  • You may bring your book to the computer only to
    enter the title.
  • You may not use your book to find answers to the
test. If you are caught so doing, you will sign
the book and parents will be notified.
  • Once you have taken your test your number should
    go back into the basket.

7
Manners Please!!
  • Do not stand behind a person to rush them through
their test. They need their privacy.
  • When you see that someone is taking a test be
quiet to allow them to concentrate.
  • Do not make comments about a persons score on a
test. It could be you the next time.

8
1 Rule
  • Never, Never, Never, take a test for another
person. If caught doing so you will face severe
    consequences.
  • All test must be taken in the classroom NOT in
the library. Ms. Vaugh and Mrs. Chandler have
been instructed not to allow 5th graders to take
    tests in the library.

9
AT RISK
  • Check daily the Diagnostic Report to see where
    you are in your goal.
  • If your name is highlighted then that means
  • You are scoring below 85 accuracy
  • You are behind in your goal
  • This is not a good place to be, but talk with
your teacher to see what you need to do.

10
Reading 60 Minutes????
  • You are required to read at least 60 minutes each
    day.
  • 30 of those minutes are at school and 30 are at
    home.
  • This is so you will reach your goal
  • Otherwise, you wont.

11
Whats in it for me??
  • Prizes awarded when you reach 25, 50, 75, and
    100 of your goal.
  • Recognition at the end of each nine weeks!!!
  • Recognition at the end of school if you have met
your goal for each nine week grading period.
  • YOU WILL BE A BETTER READER!!?
