  • 3. King Henry VII of England wanted him to find
    isles, countries, regions, or provinces that were
    unknown to all Christians. Cabot wanted to find a
    western route to Asia.

John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) He became a merchant
like his father and moved to Spain in 1490 to
find new trade routes to Asia and all of its
riches.

  • 7. 1n 1517 Martin Luther published an attack on
    the Church, accusing it of corruption. His attack
    marked the beginning of the Protestant
    Reformation.
  • 8. Said that neither kings nor bishops should
    control the church. Argued that congregations
    should choose their own elders and ministers to
    run the Church for them

Martin Luther (1483-1546) was a monk, priest,
professor, theologian, and church reformer. Wrote
hymn A Mighty Fortress is our God. His
translation of the Bible greatly influenced the
translation of the English King James Version of
the Bible. Today 70 million Christians belong to
Lutheran churches and 400 million Protestant
Christians trace their history back to Luthers
reforming work.

John Calvin was an important French theologian
during Protestant Reformation. He originated
Calvinism that spread all over the world.

    Calvins ideas
  • 10. In 1527 over a disagreement b/w the king and
    the pope. Fight began when King Henry VIII asked
    the pope to annul his marriage to Catherine of
    Aragon. Pope hesitated b/c Catherine was king of
    Spains aunt, and he didnt want to make the king
    mad. Henry became furious and broke w/the
    Catholic Church and said he was head of Englands
    church and arranged the divorce himself.

  • 11. Anglican Church (kept organizations and most
    rituals of Catholic Church)
  • 12. Someone who wanted to purify the Anglican
    (Catholic) Church during the 1500s and 1600s.
  • 13. King James was Protestant, but he refused to
    tolerate any changes in the structure of the
    Anglican Church. The Puritan idea of electing
    ministers was a direct challenge to royal
    authority this refusal caused many Puritans that
    became willing to leave England.

    sheep farms by enclosing their land and evicting
    the tenants this caused thousands of poor,
    unemployed beggars who wandered from town to town
    looking for work

  • 17. King James refused to reform the Anglican
    Church to allow for Puritan ideas such as
    electing ministers
  • 18. The need to find new markets for their wool

  • 20. When the Spanish tried to suppress
    Protestantism in the Netherlands, the Dutch
    rebelled. Queen Elizabeth allowed English
    privateers to attack Spanish ships.
  • 21. Gilbert was a well-known English soldier that
    received a charter from Queen Elizabeth to create
    a colony in America. Made 2 attempts, both
    failed, and he died at sea
  • 22. Walter Raleigh Roanoke Virginia in honor of
    Elizabeth who was known as the Virgin Queen

    hard winter came back. Sent 117 to settle in
    1587 when he returned in 1590 the colony was
    gone

    and for each servant they brought to VA

    until he converted to Catholicism. Decided to
    found a colony where Catholics could practice
    their religion. Founded Baltimore in 1632.
  • 33. Maryland proprietary colony. The proprietor
    (owner) could govern the colony any way he
    wished. Could collect , appoint govt officials,
    impose taxes, create towns
