2What is a Sodar ?
- It is an acoustic device working in the air.
- It is used for remote sensing of the atmosphere.
- It gives information such as wind speed,
direction, at various altitudes.

16Radio Acoustic Sounding System(RASS)
17What is a RASS ?
- It remotely measures temperature profiles in the
atmosphere with resolution to 0.2 Celsius. - It can be used in environmental studies for
temperature gradients, and for monitoring how the
propagation of radio waves is modified by
atmospheric conditions. - It can provides measurements up to 1,500 meters
above grounds.

- The RASS measures the vertical temperature
profile in the same layer as sampled by the
SODAR. - The measurements are made from the ground, using
a RADAR to measure the speed of the vertical
acoustic pulses which travel at a speed which
varies with the temperature of the atmosphere.
20Radio Acoustic Sounding System(RASS)
- The RASS measures the Doppler shift of the RADAR
pulse, which is then used to calculate the speed
of the acoustic pulse. - The temperature profile is calculated from the
speed profile using standard equations for the
speed of sound in air.
