Title: What are Waves

1
  • What are Waves?
  • A Disturbance where
  • Energy is transferred
  • Matter is not

2
Characteristics of a Wave
3
Two Classifications of Waves
  • Mechanical moves through medium
  • Electromagnetic does not need medium to exist

4
Mechanical Waves
  • Use Matter to transfer Energy
  • The matter through which a wave travels is called
    the Medium
  • Examples
  • Air Sound
  • Water ripples in a pond
  • Solids earth quakes

5
Looks Like!!
6
Sounds Like!!
  • An F/A-18 jet breaks the sound barrier

7
Two Types of Mechanical Waves
  • Transverse
  • Longitudinal

9
Wave Behavior
  • How do waves
  • do what they do?

10
Reflection
  • Reflection of a wave occurs when the wave strikes
an object or surface and bounces off.

11
Sound Waves
  • When a sound wave reflects, it is known as an
echo the sound reflects from the surrounding
surfaces, as in this photo of a canyon.

12
Sound Wave Reflecting Off a Wall
13
  • A Ships Sonar
  • Reflects Sound off
  • of the Ocean Floor

14
Light Waves
  • A reflection in a mirror or a pond is a
reflection of light bouncing back to your eyes.
If the surface is smooth and even, the reflection
    will be clear.

15
  • If the surface is uneven, like ripples in a pond,
the light is reflected in many directions and the
    image is not clear.

16
Refraction
Refraction
  • Refraction is the bending of a wave as it moves
    from one medium into another.

17
  • Refraction is what gives the illusion of a bent
straw or spoon in a clear glass of water. Light
waves travel faster in air than in water, so as
it passes through the water, it slows down and
    appears to bend.

18
  • As light passes through a prism, such as a
crystal or a drop of water, refraction causes
light to bend and separate into many colors and
    produces a rainbow.

19
ROYGBIV
ROYGBIV
  • The colors go in order of ROYGBIV Red, Orange,
Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. This is
the order of the colors seen in a rainbow. It is
also the order of visible light in the
    electromagnetic spectrum.

20
  • Each color refracts at a different angle because
    of their different wavelengths.

21
  • Red is first because it has the longest
wavelength so it bends the least. Blue bends
most because it has the shortest wavelength.
