Title: Building a Bibliography: Introducing EndNote
1Building a BibliographyIntroducing EndNote
2What is EndNote?
- Citations and References Management Software,
produced by Thomson Reuter - Other citations management packages
- ProCite, Reference Manager (Thomson Reuter)?
- Bibus (open source works with Open Office)?
- RefWorks, Scholar's Aid and many others
- EndNote Web (web-based EndNote lite)?
- Costs around 130 to buy, but there are
educational discounts
3What Does It Do?
- It is used to build and maintain a bibliography
or bibliography of references these can be books
or articles, but equally well may be pictures,
sounds or online resources - It can search online electronic databases such
as bibliographies or library catalogues and
download and save the results - Organises and correctly formats citations and
bibliographies in word-processed documents to
meet university or publishers' style guidelines

5Creating and Maintaining a Bibliography
- Called a 'library' in EndNote
- Each item in the library is a 'reference' these
may be papers, articles, books or monographs, but
may equally be maps, figures, tables, pictures or
anything that can be stored in an electronic
file sound, moving images etc

7Creating and Downloading References (1)?
- References may be entered into an EndNote library
manually this is time-consuming, but sometimes
necessary - Most users prefer if possible to download from an
external electronic source - Uses the Z39.50 protocol, the widely-observed
standard for electronic bibliographies - Thus possible to search a very large number of
online databases bibliographies, library
catalogues etc, including the BL
8Creating and Downloading References (2)?
- Complex search with Boolean combination of search
terms - Searches on Author, Title, Keyword and Date
fields the most useful - Results may be downloaded and saved into a new or
existing EndNote library many hundreds of
references may be added at once in this way - This is a quick way to establish a reading-list
or bibliography on any given subject

11EndNote as a Citations Manager
- Having created the library, EndNote also
functions as a citations manager during the
process of writing - Interacts with Word through the 'Cite While You
Write' tool to generate correctly-formatted
citations and bibliographies - Pre-loaded with a large number of citation
style-sheets for many different journals and
publishers more can be added and tailored as
necessary
