Academic Writings and Citation Styles
  • In academic writing, whenever we use someone
    elses works, ideas, theory, quotes, methods,
    data, etc. we must cite the original source
  • Citation styles are the rules that govern on how
    we format these citations
  • There are many different citation styles set up
    by different academic bodies or publishers. The
    most commonly used ones include the MLA style,
    APA style and the Chicago style

  • RefWorks is a web-based tool that allows Lingnan
    staff and students to
  • Download citations directly from the Library
    catalogue and most databases subscribed by the
    Library
  • Organize the citations into different folders
  • Generate in-text citation, bibliography or
    reference list in the citation style of your
    choice, including APA, MLA, Harvard, Chicago
    style and more.

First Time User Create Personal RefWorks Account
  • Library Home Page ? Databases ? RefWorks ? First
    time users
  • http//www.library.ln.edu.hk/cgi-bin/luaccess?dbna
    merefworks
  • Click Signup for an Individual Account on the
    Left Panel

Import Records from LU Library Catalogue
  • http//www.library.ln.edu.hk/
  • Search by keywords / subject / author / title,
    etc. to find useful items
  • Save multiple records or Export individual
    record
  • Export Marked Records
  • Choose MARC Format and Output to Screen
  • Ctrl-A to select all Ctrl-C to copy to clipboard

Import Records from LU Library Catalogue (Contd)
  • Now Switch to the RefWorks Session (or open a new
    window and login to RefWorks)
  • Select References ? Import
  • Select Import Filter/Data Source MARC Format
  • Select Database All MARC Formats
  • Select Import Data from the following text and
    paste (Ctrl-V) the clipboard contents to the
    input area below
  • Click Import

Organize by Folders
  • The Folders option is located at the menu bar
    below the Refworks Logo at the upper left screen
  • Under Folders, create your new Folder
  • View All References or Last Imported Folders
    Select the records you want and use the Put in
    Folder option to store the selected records in
    the desired folder

Direct Import (E.g. ProQuest)
  • At the Search Results in ProQuest, Select which
    Citations to Keep by Marking the Check Boxes
  • At My Research, Choose Export Citations
  • Choose Export directly to RefWorks

Copy and Paste Import (E.g. Emerald)
  • At the Results List, Mark the Check Boxes and
    Click Add to my List
  • Select Marked List in Emerald and Choose
    Download (ASCII)
  • Copy All (Ctrl-A) Copy to Clipboard (Ctrl-C)
  • Use Reference / Import function in RefWorks
  • Choose Emerald and All Databases as Import
    Filter/Source and Database
  • Paste (Ctrl-V) to Input Area and Click Import

Enter Citations Manually
  • At RefWorks Menu, References ? Add New Reference
  • Choose the desired output format in View fields
    used by
  • Choose RefType (e.g. Journal, Book, Web Page,etc)
  • The fields marked with the Green Check Mark
    should be entered because these are the required
    fields for the selected type of record under the
    selected output style

Creating a Bibliography
  • There are two options to create a bibliography
  • Simply create a bibliography from selected
    records directly within RefWorks
  • Use Write-N-Cite to create a bibliography and
    in-text citations

Create a Bibliography from Selected Records
Directly within RefWorks
  • Select "Bibliography"
  • Select desired style from the Output Format
    drop-down menu
  • Click the radio button of Format a Bibliography
    from a List of References
  • Select desired format from the File Type to
    Create drop-down menu.
  • Click the radio button next to All References or
    References From and select the desired folder
    from the drop-down menu
  • Click Create Bibliography
