The Bayeaux Tapestry

theme
  • The Bayeaux tapestry is a story teller over the
centuries. It tells the story of William the
conqueror all up until the Battle of Hastings. It
is very controversial though because the tapestry
shows a man with a n arrow in his eye. Scholars
have had many debates over if this man was
    William.

3
Who made it
  • Bishop Odo commissioned the Tapestry but no one
knows who made it. People think that it must have
been a man because the scenes were so well
described that someone who was there could only
have done it. Back in those times women were not
    allowed to fight.

4
Did many people make it?
  • Some people believe that many people made the
Bayeaux tapestry. They believe that for every
piece on it a person was given a piece of cloth
and sewed what they saw in there battles all over
the empire. Scholars then believe that all of the
people were then called then called to a meeting
and sewed the pieces together to make the
    tapestry.

6
How big is it.
  • The Bayeaux tapestry is 70 meters long and ½ a
meter wide. People believe though that some of
the tapestry is missing. If the missing pieces
were found this might explain Williams death.

7
Where was it made?
  • No one is sure where the Tapestry was made but
most people believe it was made in England.

8
Where was it?
  • After the Bayeaux tapestry was made it was
transported the Notre dame church where Bishop
Odo the commissioner for the tapestry worked. It
    hung there for 400 years.

9
Why was it made
  • The Bayeaux tapestry was made to celebrate the
happy events up to the battle of Hastings.

10
The tapestry is in danger
  • The French revolution begins. The actions of a
man, Lambert Leonard Leforestier saved the
tapestry. People who were fighting or running
used cloth to cover their wagons. Lambert knew
that cloth was short so when people were just
about to take the tapestry he switched it with
another piece of cloth. Shortly after that cloth
    was gone.

11
In danger again
  • In 1803 the tapestry was to be cut up after
    Napoleon vanquished England. However when
Napoleon gave this up the tapestry was returned
    to the people of England.

12
Repairs
  • After that the tapestry was kept on a scroll to
keep it safe. This did however stretch the string
of the tapestry. It was moved all around Bayeaux.
England's interest began to grow in the tapestry.
They wanted to know more about it. Then an
English draughtsman was sent to investigate the
tapestry. He looked at every stich for 2 years.
And then in 1842 the repairs were made.
