1Mini-Lesson 1
2Hey, Garfield fans!
- As a class, can you figure out what the
white thing in the middle of the room is?
3Does this help?
- What might be the thing in the first frame?
- Who might be responsible for wrapping Garfield?
- Why is Garfield wrapped?
Im Garfield.
4Who wrapped Garfield?
Did he mean to wrap Garfield?
Does Jon seem happy?
Why is Jon happy?
This is Jon.
This is Odie.
5Congratulations !
- By breaking the cartoon down into parts and
looking at each part, you have just analyzed the
cartoon.
6End of Lesson
7Mini-Lesson 2
8What do you know about this guy Odie?
9Turn to a partner and tell them everything you
know about Garfield, Odie and Jon in a minute.
10(No Transcript)
11Evaluate or grade Odie on how well he did?Did he
do what Jon would have expected?
Did he do what Garfield would have expected?
12But most importantly---Did he do what WE would
have expected?
13Evaluation
- By comparing the characters actions to what we
expect of them, we are able to evaluate not only
Odie, but how the cartoon portrayed him.
14Evaluate
- Was it an accurate or poor Garfield cartoon?
- Discuss why or why not.
15Mini-Lesson 3
16Remember this?
- We know what it is, but
- how would you describe
- this picture to a person
- who couldnt see it.
- Elaborate on it.
- Is it narrow or thick?
- Would the tape stick to the wall?
- How did it get there?
17As a class, elaborate on Garfield!
- Do you think he is happy or sad, mad or glad?
- Do you think he wants to do damage to the person
who did this to him? - Predict
- Do you think he WILL do damage to the responsible
person? - When?
- What will happen next?
- What might follow?
18 Elaborate on this!Turn to a
friend and give as many descriptions as possible
about this scene in one minute.
19(No Transcript)
20Congratulations
- You have just elaborated on the cartoon by
- adding details not noticed before
- commenting on characters and their actions
- predicting what might happen next
21Mini-Lesson 4
22- The year - 1730
- The place Burlington, New Jersey
- The source- Pennsylvania Gazette
- The reason- witch hunts
- The result- death of some innocent people
23The following excerpt is from an article of the
PennsylvaniaGazette. Please read along.
24The two people were to be tested to determine
whether the charge of witchcraft was true. They
would be subjected to two tests. In the first
test they would be weighed in a scale against the
Bible. If they were heavier than the Bible, then
this would be evidence that they were not
witches.
25In the second test, they would be tied and
thrown in a body of water. If they floated, then
this would be evidence that they were witches.
26Analyze
- Wow! What was that all about? Quickly reread the
excerpts and watch for the answers to these
questions. - For what reasons were the tests?
- How many tests would be done?
- How would they know if they were witches?
27The two people were to be tested to determine

this would be evidence that they were witches.
29Here are the questions again.
For what reasons were the tests? How many tests
would be done? Two How would they
know if they were witches? First test If person
was heavier than Bible, then he was not a
witch. Second test If a person floated, he was
deemed a witch.
To determine if the persons were witches
30In analyzing we
- Break the source down into smaller parts
- Investigate or examine its parts
- Ask questions

32Mini-Lesson 5Evaluation 2-B
33Back to the Witch Trials
- Reread the short paragraph of the trial.
34- The two people were to be tested to determine
whether the charge of witchcraft was true. They
would be subjected to two tests. In the first
test they would be weighed on a scale against the
Bible. If they were heavier than the Bible, then
this would be evidence that they were not
witches.
35Evaluate
- What kind of questions came to mind and were not
answered? - Share and have someone write down the questions
you have as a class about this witch test.
36Evaluate
- Now look at the questions. Place a check mark
beside the ones which show a comparison with
something the class already has some knowledge
of. - Example How much could a Bible possibly weigh?
(We know that a Bible usually doesnt weigh as
much as a person.)
37- Are there any questions you cant answer as a
class? - How could you possibly answer these with more
time?
38- As the class evaluated the test trial, it
probably found itself comparing ideas in the
trial -
- with what is known today
- with what could be known with research
- In other terms, the class evaluated or judged
this event with facts.
39Whats the Evaluation?
- Or simply, what is the class judgment about this
excerpt over the witch trial? - Share and keep results for tomorrow.
40 41Mini-Lesson 6Elaboration 2-C
42Witch Trial at Mount Holly
- .They would be subjected to two tests. In the
first test they would be weighed in a scale
against the Bible. If they were heavier than the
Bible, then this would be evidence that they were
not witches.
43Elaborate
- Sketch a picture of what this event might have
looked like. -
- Who is going to stand where?
- Who or what is going to be on the other side
- How will they know if the person is a witch?
- How might the person(s) be dressed?
- Be sure not to add something that might be
inaccurate.
44Elaboration
- Show your friend your picture. Ask them to tell
of anything you added which may not be accurate
for the time period. - Example A police car waiting in the background
for the guilty.
45- The more you labored on it or provided details,
- the more you expanded you and your friends
knowledge of the Puritans in 1730. - Good job.
46A final point
- In the previous lesson, we may have been harsh
about evaluating the Puritans and the trial. - Now that we have elaborated or labored about
it in detail, can we begin to understand that
they didnt know all that we know today? - Giving the detailed treatment to the source, we
might want to reevaluate how accurate the writing
might have been for the time period.
47End of Lesson
48Mini-Lesson 7
49Analyze this!
What does the term analyze mean?
What we will do to analyze it?
50Take a couple minutes to write a few sentences of
what you find to be true about the situation in
this picture.
51As a class, discuss these two ideas.
- Why did the photographer take the picture?
- What was the point he/she was trying to make?
52Keep your sentences containing an analysis until
tomorrow.
53End of Lesson
54Mini-Lesson 8
55You will need your written comments from
yesterdays work.
56Evaluate
- Yesterday we analyzed this picture by
- Investigating it closely
- Looking at small details
- Considering motives or reasons for taking the
picture -
57Lets now evaluate this picture to see how well
it portrays the situation of the homeless.
58Judge as a class by answering afew easy
questions.Is this situation possible?
59Evaluate Where might the situation occur?
60Evaluate Does this situation occur in
Huntington?
61Evaluate Is this picture realistic?
62Evaluate How does this source capture realism?
63In evaluating we
- Considered familiar situations
- Considered facts
- Considered opinions
- Considered different factors such as setting
time and place
64Whats your final evaluation? Is this picture an
accurate portrayal of the homeless?
- Consider all that has been said and come up with
your own evaluation of the photograph. - Write a short paragraph about the accuracy of
this photograph. -
-
65Keep your work.
- Share your evaluations with the class if time.
66End of Lesson
67Time now to elaborate or to add more of your own
opinions.
Minimum wages
money
Bad luck
employment
Consider details or issues perhaps not present in
the source.
shelter
68Elaborate
- In laboring over the picture, we can discuss
important ideas not necessarily represented in
the picture, such as answers to the following - What do you think about the homeless?
- What ideas to you have for helping the homeless
population? - Do you feel our society does enough for them?
- Too much for them?
69Elaborate. What can you add about this situation
that isnt necessarily shown in this picture.
Write a short paragraph on your ideas about the
homeless situation.
70Share writings with a partner or class.
