  • Single configuration G8CM versions use the
    concept of CCI
  • Configuration Component Identifier
  • G8CM V5 introduces the concepts of UCI (Universal
    Component Identifier) andCentral System
  • The Central System is a collection of VMF HOS/GOS
    configurations
  • The UCI is used to uniquely identify a device
    used in more than one configuration
  • The VMF VMEC file will be managed and generated
    by G8CM (V5)

ASD Evolution vs. FC Evolution
  • A Disk Subsystem is ASD or Non-ASD
  • A Disk Subsystem is ESCON or Fibre Channel
  • With larger and larger disk drives, ASD evolution
    becomes inevitable
  • Number of Units/Drive per Subsystem
  • Number of Logical Devices to manage
  • Moving to ASD can be as simple as rebooting with
    MALFC devices but..
  • Addressing above issues, only by using variable
    size MALVC devices
  • Defining MALVC devices implies data migration
  • FC evolution also implies data migration
  • These migrations can be done in one or two steps
  • DMM can help in both cases

  • ASD evolution while remaining ESCON
  • New data migration when moving to FC
  • FC Subsystems are ASD only
  • Possible simple All MALFC configuration
  • Extra disk space benefit
  • Migrating to FC is more than channel swap
  • A logical copy utility has to be used to move
    data from ESCON S/S to FC S/S
  • FMS Save / Restore or FAS
  • DMM CLONE directive

  • New 4-port ESCON directors
  • Mixed ESCON / FC IOSP channels and CDA Adaptors
