Title: CIB Task Group 61: Benchmarking Construction Performance Data

1
CIB Task Group 61 Benchmarking Construction
Performance Data
  • Arto Saari

2
Purpose of this meeting
  • To introduce CIB TG61
  • Layout the Global Initiative
  • To discuss the new Journal of Performance
    Information
  • To identify if any interest exists in joining and
    partnering with the TG

3
Source of CIB TG61
  • CIB TG61 comes out of the Performance Based
Studies Research Group (PBSRG) at Arizona State
    University
  • PBSRGs research involves the use of performance
    information in construction procurement and
    project management
  • PBSRGs technology has be tested on over 420
projects totaling over 400 Million in
    construction. The results are
  • 98 of projects on time
  • 98 of project on budget
  • 98 of project no contractor generated chagne
    orders
  • 100 customer satisfaction

4
CIB TG61 Vision
  • To identify and capture the existence, use, and
classification of performance information in the
delivery and maintenance of facilities.  From
this, create a resource to allow participants in
the delivery and maintenance of facilities to
better add value in their endeavors.

Current Membership
6
Objectives
  • Identify what performance information and
indicators are, which ones can be measured, and
    how they can be measured.
  • Identify the impact of performance information on
    design, construction, and facility management
    performance
  • Identify the impact of performance information in
    the determination of value
  • Identify what performance information has been
used to deliver and operate facilities
  • Identify the different usages of performance
    information
  • Identify the sustainability of the performance
information to increase the value of construction
    over time

7
Strategic Tasks
  • Identify a group of world experts and seek to
achieve a form of consensus on performance
    indicators, definitions, experiences, and
    strategic implications.
  • Identify the researchers and practitioners who
have used (and currently use) performance
    information
  • Identify uses of performance information and
    databases
  • Identify the impact of performance information
    through surveys to construction clients
  • Identify tests or implementations of performance
    information and their outcomes
  • Identify areas of current and future research to
promote the use of performance information
databases to increase the performance of
    construction
  • Publish a document of the results of the study
and create an internet page to the findings

8
Leadership Group
  • Dean Kashiwagi, PhD, PE, Professor at Arizona
    State University, Director of PBSRG
  • Charles Egbu, Professor at Glasgow Caledonian
    University, UK , PhD, PE
  • Kenn Sullivan, PhD, Assistant Professor at
    Arizona State University

9
The Global Initiative
10
The Global Initiative
  • To understand performance information TG61 is
starting by capturing the current level of
    construction performance across the globe.
  • To accomplish this, TG61 will move
    country-by-country looking for leaders and
partners in each country to look within their own
    borders.

11
The Global Initiative
  • Establish a dialogue through researchers and
industry professionals in major countries across
    the globe
  • Identify a CIB TG Leader for each country. This
person or team will act as the key coordinator
for the efforts in their country.
  • Under the CIB banner, the TG Country Leader will
coordinate with TG61 to bring academics and
    industry together.
  • Each new participant will be added to an
    International Advisory Board and Journal
Editorial Board to facilitate and coordinate the
    global effort.

12
The Global Initiative
  • The academics and industry professionals will
work together to capture and benchmark the
performance of construction in their country.
    For each country this includes
  • Identification of experts (persons) in the area
    of performance and value
  • Identification of significant documents on
    performance information
  • Identification of significant research papers and
efforts to use performance and value in their
    country.
  • Gather and summarize the above information for
the new CIB Journal in Performance Information
  • The information collected from all countries will
be combined into a CIB resource that will allow
academics and industry personnel to add value to
    their profession.

13
CIB Journal of Performance Information
  • Basic Premise
  • Performance information can cause change
  • Proper use of performance information
  • Risk Minimization
  • Efficient Communication
  • Schedule, budget, and client satisfaction
  • System performance (manufacturing)
  • Design performance
  • Tracking and benchmarking
  • Value measurement (value added)
  • Quality, safety, profitability, etc.

14
Current Call For Papers
  • Current Call for Papers
  • Due 31 August 2006
