  • A Brief History of Time

Galileo
  • Copernicus suggested a heliocentric model of the
    universe, where earth was not the center. Galileo
    supported this idea.

Galileo
  • Galileo contributed to space exploration by his
    work with telescopes and discovering four of
    Jupiters moons. It wasnt until Newton and
    others in the 1700s and 1800s that any further
    astronomy was done.

Karl Marx
  • Karl Marx was a Russian Jew. He wrote The
    Communist Manifesto, which described communism
    as way to run a country. This triggered the
    Russian Revolution in 1917.

The Russian Revolution
  • In 1917 Russia underwent a communist revolution,
    which kicked out the ruling Tsar Nicholas II.
    Russia became communist under Vladimir Lenin.

  • During the 1900s, world wars broke out twice.

  • By the end of WWII, Russia was a major world
    power with the U.S. Russian communism, however
    was seen as a threat.

  • After WWII, the two major powers were afraid of
    each other and until the 1990s were considered
    enemies.

  • Both countries competed fiercely to gain
    influence in other countries.
  • Both competed athletically
  • Both competed to gain achievements in space.

  • In 1960 JFK was elected President and in 1961 he
    announced that it was his goal that an American
    walk on the moon by the end of the decade.

    international cooperation in space.
