  • exciting array of activities
  • in support of Spread the
  • Net. Students organized
  • a dance, hot chocolate
  • sale, and email campaign,
  • with proceeds supplying
  • more than 280 bed nets to
  • families in Liberia and
  • Rwanda!

  • broadcasting announcements
  • at the school, the group
  • raised funds to supply nets to
  • hundreds of families.
  • A cheque was presented at an
  • annual UNICEF Chefs event
  • along with a moving speech
  • rousing several members of
  • the audience to further top up
  • funds raised by the school to
  • an amazing total of 10,000!

Fighting malaria other evils of the world
British Columbia
  • At Alberni District Secondary
  • School in Port Alberni, BC,
  • social justice students mobilized
  • to support Spread the Net
  • empowering other teens to make
  • a difference. The social justice
  • team creatively promoted
  • Spread the Net as part of the
  • schools Totem Spirit campaign,
  • Which included an annual
  • Basketball tournament and skit
  • competition.

  • The skit featured 'Social
  • Justice Super Jimbo fighting
  • the symbolic evils of the
  • world including 'Climate
  • Change', 'Poverty, and 'War'.
  • When Super Jimbo arrived
  • at the symbolic evil
  • 'Disease', he confronted a
  • mosquito in a theatrical
  • battle. Luckily, UNICEF
  • saved the day, giving Super
  • Jimbo a bed net, successfully
  • wiping away Disease from

First came Band Aid, then Live 8, and
nowYouth Aid!
Ontario
  • A group of teenagers from Sacred Heart Catholic
  • High School in Newmarket, Ontario organized
  • Youth Aid a Beat the Mosquitoes benefit
  • concert. Founded by grade 10 student Alex
  • OBrien, Youth Aid was modeled after Live Aid
  • and featured a roster of youth talent including
  • exceptional dancers and musicians. DVDs of the
  • concert were sold to increase awareness and
  • raise additional funds.

  • The school even got their
  • town involved, proclaiming
  • February 2008 Youth Aid for
  • Spread the Net month! These
  • exceptional efforts resulted in
  • an amazing contribution of
  • over 16,500 the highest
  • among all schools across the
  • country providing 1,650 bed
  • nets for impoverished families
  • in Liberia and Rwanda.

Be the change, Beat the Mosquitoes
Prairie
  • At John Taylor Collegiate in Winnipeg,
  • Manitoba, science students rallied
  • around the Beat the Mosquitoes
  • Challenge helping to supply over 100
  • bed nets, and also joined the Be the
  • Change video contest through Quantum
  • Shift TV.
  • By creating a video to document the
  • schools efforts, students helped spread
  • the word about malaria prevention and
  • entered for a chance to win 50,000
  • prize pack for the school.

Netraising champions rise to the challenge
Quebec
  • Students, teachers and staff of the
  • International programme at
  • Carrefour High School in
  • Gatineau, Quebec flexed their
  • net-raising muscles through
  • several cool initiatives including a
  • bowl-a-thon, candy sale and
  • malaria quiz sponsored by family
  • and friends. The fewer mistakes
  • made on the quiz, the more
  • money students raised.

  • raised, helping to provide
  • more than 500 nets for
  • families in Rwanda and
  • Liberia! This school also
  • ranked highest fundraiser
  • in the province of
  • Quebec, winning a
  • special acoustic
  • performance by superstar
  • Marie-Mai!

Global Development Village
National
Staff and volunteers of UNICEF Canada and Spread
the Net participated in the Global Development
Village, organized by the Youth of the World. At
this four day event high school students had an
opportunity to participate in workshop activities
promoting awareness of the Millennium Development
Goals, including the prevention of malaria
transmission and other diseases.

  • Students took part in an educational
  • workshop, participated in a bed net
  • assembly simulation exercise, and
  • viewed the Eye See III photo exhibit
  • showcasing photos taken by
  • children in Liberia and Rwanda.
