4In 1987 the City of Bath became a World Heritage
Site. To enable this to happen, the local
council had to persuade the member states of
UNESCO that the city was of Outstanding Universal
Value.
5What do you think Outstanding Universal Value
means? How would you decide if a place was of
Outstanding Universal Value?
6The outstanding universal values that Bath
demonstrates are that it
- Represents a masterpiece of human creative
genius - Exhibits an important interchange of human values
on developments in architecture and town
planning - Is an outstanding example of an architectural
ensemble which illustrates significant stages in
human history.
7This really means that Bath is recognised for
- The Roman remains (Roman Baths)
- The town planning of the Georgian City
- The quality of the architecture (Neo-Classical)
in particular the quality of some set-pieces
(Queen Square, The Circus and Royal Crescent)
8Do you think that these things make Bath a place
of outstanding universal value?
