Key Stage 2 staffing

Homework
  • In addition to class work the children have
    weekly homework to support, consolidate or extend
    work in class.
  • Each week homework consists of
  • reading at least 3 times per week,
  • spelling words to learn for a test,
  • Written homework (either literacy or mathematics)
  • At times children will also be given extra
    homework in other subjects (e.g. art sketching,
    science practical, research)
  • During the Summer term, all children will be set
    an independent project to complete over a number
    of weeks.

Literacy support
  • Literacy Intervention Programme QUEST (Year 3
    only)
  • Children are selected based on Key Stage 1 SATS
    results in reading or writing. The programme is
    aimed at children who attained a level 2c.
  • The purpose of the programme is to move pupils
    who are working just below the national average
    (2c) to average level (2b).
  • The programme runs for 20 consecutive weeks.

Maths support
  • Mathematics Intervention Programmes - Springboard
    3 and 4.
  • Children are selected based on Key Stage 1 SATS
    results in mathematics.
  • They work in a group of up to 6 pupils.
  • The programme is designed to move them on from
    working at a level just below average (2c) to
    average level (2b)
  • This support is in addition to the usual
    mathematics work and pupils will be given extra
    homework to support learning.

Assessment
  • Forms of assessment in school
  • Weekly evaluation of work, spelling tests.
  • Half termly star weeks, children are assessed
    against Key Objectives in literacy and
    mathematics and using end of unit outcomes in
    other subjects.
  • Termly high frequency spelling tests are
    completed
  • Yearly the children complete SATS tests
    (optional in Year 3 and 4) in reading, writing,
    spelling, mathematics and mental maths. end of
    MAY
  • PIPS tests completed in reading, mathematics and
    context -
  • end of JUNE

Transition
  • Assessment data is passed between teachers when
    children move from year to year, this is used to
    group pupils and ensure that learning is at the
    appropriate level.
  • Additional information regarding individuals is
    passed on to aid transfer creating a smooth
    transition from year to year.
  • At Key Stage 2 transition also involves the
    Middle Schools.
  • Children in Year 4 are visited by the link
    teachers from St Edwards or Churnet View and
    essential information is passed on.
  • In addition, pupils complete transfer units in
    mathematics that are sent up and revisited during
    the first week at middle school. Transition units
    in literacy are being reviewed by the middle and
    first schools.
  • Pupils going to St Edwards have three transfer
    days in the summer term, the first with their
    current class teacher.
  • Pupils going to Churnet View currently have one
    day to visit the school.
