Bocce Ball
Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Physical Education
Department

History Objective
  • Bocce has seen many changes throughout the ages.
It has evolved from being a crude sport played
with rounded rocks, or even coconuts, to the
modern game with composite or metal balls. Bocce
has been known under many names - lawn bowling,
nine pins, skittles, pentanque, to name a few -
and has seen many rule changes. The popularity of
Bocce in America has been on the rise since it
swept California in 1989. There are more than
25,000,000 Bocce enthusiasts that have heard of
the sport, play recreationally, or play on
structured courts in the United States today.
  • Open Bocce is the most popular form of bocce.
The great thing about open bocce is that it can
be played almost anywhere there is open space.
This includes grassy surfaces such as a front
lawn or back yard, dirt surfaces, sandy surfaces
such as the beach, and even paved surfaces like
    parking lots.
  • The purpose of the game is to score points by
getting your bocce balls as close as possible to
    the pallino.

3
Rules
  • Bocce is played with eight large balls and one
smaller ball (called the pallino). The pallino
can vary in color, usually it is white.
  • You will notice that each bocce ball set has
balls with several different colors Blue and
Green (cold colors) as well as Red and Yellow
    (warm colors).
  • The game can be played with 2, 4, or 8 players.

4
Rules Continued
  • Players must always throw the bocce balls
    underhand.
  • All players will take turns throwing their bocce
balls until they have no more to throw. At this
time the teams will be awarded points based on
how close their bocce balls are to the pallino.
  • Once all of the bocce balls have been thrown this
    will now complete one frame.
  • A game is won when a player reaches 13 points.
Play as many frames as necessary until a player
reaches this point level. Of course, this point
level can be decreased or increased depending on
    time constraints between players.

5
Tournament Court
  • Most times games are playing on courts anywhere
outdoors. The court boundaries can be basically
anything you want. However, there are standard
    courts for tournament play.
  • L - Length - 76 feetW - Width - 10-13 feetFL -
    Pointing Foul Line - 6 feetSL - Spock/Hitting
    Foul Line - 10 feetCL - Center Line - 1/2 of
    Length

6
Heres another way to play Bocce. This uses a
non-tournament court to play on. This play is
more common at family gatherings, picnics or
first time playing
