MOTIVATION
With the rapid improvements in processing
capabilities and micro / nano technologies, there
are more opportunities to cost effectively
monitor the world around us to improve our Safety
and Security
5
MOTIVATION
As an Academic Institution, UNH CEPS must provide
its current and future students (our Customers
and the future Engineers and Scientists) the
educational opportunities to understand and apply
these technologies in real world situations.

UNH CURRENT ASSETS
Research Assets Test
  • At the ECE department of UNH we have developed

- an IEEE 1149.1/IEEE 1149.4 cell library for
MOSIS AMI 0.5
- the design methodology for IEEE 1149.4
compatible designs
- the R, and C measurement methodologies using
IEEE 1149.4
- the corrosion monitoring module for IEEE 1149.4

UNH CURRENT ASSETS
Research Assets Test
  • The research has been done in the areas of
  • Design For Test (DFT)
  • - Built In Self Test (BIST)
  • - IEEE P1500 Embedded Core Test

We work with the ATE tools MCT 2000 Eclipse

Collaborative Engineering - ECE 777/877
Collaborative Engineering is a discipline which
studies processes where engineers from diverse
disciplines cooperate to specify, design,
manufacture, test, market and maintain a product.
Students will work in small groups and conduct a
project relevant to his/her specialty and/or
interest contributing to the overall course
project The course project is a study in sensors
and security resulting in a partial subsystems
design of a smart and secure research laboratory
(S2Lab).
16
Possible Projects
  • The S2Lab projects can be local or remote and
    involve
  • monitoring structural fatigue (buildings,
    bridges, roads)
  • monitoring the environment inside and outside
    buildings,
  • determining energy efficiency,
  • detecting pollutants and harmful chemicals,
  • authenticating and tracking individuals or
    vehicles,
  • anti-tampering techniques,
  • computer/network security,
  • etc.

Projects of this new type require a
multidisciplinary team effort, from different
Engineering and Physical Sciences majors.
17
S2LAB as a SECURE LAB
  • The S2Lab itself will become a testbed for the
physical protection of a specific area. Students
will be able to work on technologies for personal
    identification and verification (facial, voice,
    eye, fingerprints, etc.), combination coding,
    individual tracking, etc.

    Collaborative Engineering
  • Senior/Graduate Level Course
  • This project based multidisciplinary course will
be offered in Fall 2003 by the Department of
    Electrical and Computer Engineering.
    http//www.ece.unh.edu
  • Course Description
  • Collaborative Engineering is a discipline which
studies processes where engineers from diverse
    disciplines cooperate to specify, design,
manufacture, test, market and maintain a product.
The course is a graduate, multidisciplinary
reading course with a paper/design project and a
contingent of invited speakers from academia,
government, and industry. Students will work in
small groups and conduct a project relevant to
his/her specialty and/or interest contributing to
the overall course project The course project is
a study in sensors and security resulting in a
partial subsystems design of a smart and secure
    research laboratory (S2Lab). S2Lab is a
state-of-the-art laboratory to be implemented in
    the New Kingsbury Hall http//www.ceps.unh.edu
and serve as a prototype for other buildings. For
example, the Fire Marshalls Office, Concord, NH.
The S2Lab projects can involve monitoring
    structure fatigue, monitoring the environment
inside and outside the S2Lab and determining
    energy efficiency, detecting pollutants and
    harmful chemicals, and authenticating and
tracking individuals inside and outside the lab.
Projects of this new type require a
    multidisciplinary effort, from different
Engineering and Physical Sciences majors. For
example, a group may design a microsystem using
the SoC technology, search sensor devices to be
used in the lab for security purposes, or develop
a priori diagnostic techniques. 4 credits.
  • Course Philosophy
  • Course topics emulate a real life environment
    and involve multi-discipline field experience.
  • Modules are divided into non-technical and
    technical categories.
  • The entire course will be structured in
accordance with the ISO9000 quality framework.
  • Students will undergo Counter terrorist
training at the Fire Academy, Concord NH.
    http//www.state.nh.us/safety/fst/index.html
  • As part of the management modules the student
will participate in training aimed at team and
leadership skills development at the Browne
    Center, UNH. http//www.brownecenter.com
