Introduction
  • Beaver hats were produce in a variety of ways.
    From 1650 to 1850 the beaver hat was very popular
    in much of Europe. In 1650s the beaver hat was
    extinct in western Europe so North America became
    the source and kept the fashion alive for another
    200 years.

What is it?
  • The beaver hat was a very popular hat.
  • It held its shape under rough wear and was water
    proof.
  • There are two kinds of beaver, parchment beaver
    and coat beavers.
  • Parchment beaver were trapped then traded
    immediately.
  • Trappers however were after coat beaver because
    it was easier to process.

How it was made?
  • The beaver hair had little barbs on the end.
  • when the barbs were pressed down it interlock and
    created a solid fabric.
  • this process is called felting.
  • the felt was then taken to form a hat.
  • the beaver hat did not look furry when it was
    done.

Beaver pelt
  • Beaver pelts were worn as winter coats before
    they were traded.
  • Beaver pelts had two kind of hair short, thick,
    soft wooly layer and a long coarse layer.
  • The long coarse layer was not used for the
    felting process.

What was it used for?
  • Used for wearing to protect you from the rain and
    cold.
  • In the 18 century and early 19 century there was
    a big demand for beaver .
  • Hudson Bay Company explored and develop new lands
    to search for fur.

Over the years
  • Over the years hat changed and became more
    stiffer and formal
  • brims were more narrower and often turned up on
    the back and front
  • the stovepipe became the fashion for gentlemen's
