13Five Strategies for Effective Searching
- Develop a search strategy
- Use the vocabulary appropriately
- Look at the bibliographies of the really good
articles - Find out who has cited the really good articles
- Ask a librarian!
14Strategy 1 Develop a Search Strategy
- Write out your search strategy
- Combination of terms and concepts
- Three concepts generally works the best
- Search broadly for each concept, and narrow by
combining terms
15Strategy Examples
- Examples
- What are the risk factors for cardiovascular
disease among men? - How does race and/or ethnicity affect risk for
diabetes? - What is the appropriate prophylactic treatments
for a women with either the BRCA-1 or BRCA-2
genes?
16Conceptualize Search
- Think about synonyms or like terms to describe
the concepts - Risk factors
- Risk factors or lifestyle or genetic disposition
or list other individual risk factors - Cardiovascular disease
- Cardiovascular disease or heart attack or
hypertension - Men
- Men or males
17How OR and AND work
Risk factors or lifestyle or genetic disposition
or list other individual risk factors
In this search, we have tried to find all terms
that are related to immunizations by using OR.
This gives us a very large result cluster.
18How OR and AND work
Risk factors or lifestyle or genetic disposition
or list other individual risk factors
Cardiovascular disease or heart attack or
hypertension
Once we finish searching each concept, we need to
combine them using AND.
We want to find the articles where all 3 circles
converge.
Hispanic or Mexican American or Latinos
19How OR and AND work
Risk factors or lifestyle or genetic disposition
or BMI or obesity or list other individual risk
factors
Cardiovascular disease or heart attack or
hypertension
Hispanic or Mexican American or Latinos
The purple combines both the health policy terms
and the country terms using AND
The orange combines both the immunization terms
and the country terms using AND
