Gasification
  • Gasification as a chemical process can convert
    low cost and waste hydrocarbons into a
    combination of hydrogen and carbon monoxide gas.
    This syngas can be reacted to produce a wide
    range of hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons include
    replacement of all products made from imported
    oil and natural gas.
  • Gasification was first commercialized in the
    1930s.
  • Gasification has the potential to be a major
    contributor to energy independence and economic
    resurgence for coal-rich oil-importing nations.
  • For example, the United States has 23 of the
    total world reserves of coal. This translates to
    the capability of

    generation needs as well as replacing all
    imported oil for the next 100 years.
  • Economics preclude the implementation of
    conventional gasification processes unless oil
    prices are maintained above 50 per barrel for a
    sustained period.
