3Guided Reading
- Each week we will begin a new story. We will
stay with this story for the entire week, doing
different activities each day. By doing this, we
are helping to strengthen comprehension, fluency,
and many other skills, such as decoding,
spelling, and word meaning. This is also where
we pull our vocabulary words from. It is our
goal to expose the students to the vocabulary
words in such a way that they will feel
comfortable with their meaning and spelling. We
ultimately want to start seeing these words used
correctly in their writing, as well as, their
oral vocabulary.
4Writing
- Our writing program is designed to build
confidence and knowledge of the writing process.
We are starting with the basics such as, complete
sentences, punctuation, capitalization, etc. By
using our Georgia Standards for Writing, we are
reinforcing beginning, middle and end, as well as
topic sentences and staying on track with our
original idea. We are preparing for the Georgia
Writing Test by composing pieces of writing in
the areas of Narrative, Persuasive,
Informational, and Response to Literature.
5Math
In the past, Vickery Creek Elementary has taught
math from the Everyday Math Series. However,
beginning with the 2007-08 school year, a new
math program was adopted. This new program has
the look and feel of a more traditional series
with an emphasis on hands-on, constant
assessment, and a 'students as the leader'
approach. I am very excited about the new program
from the stand point that it brings parents back
into the mix. No longer will parents feel like
they do not know how to help their children with
math homework. This will look and feel much more
traditional, with a few twists. I guarantee that
your child will be able to teach you something
that you didn't know. That's what we do in third
grade - prepare to be leaders for the next
generation!
6Spelling
- Your child will have a spelling test each
Friday. They are responsible for knowing how to
spell the words that will follow a certain
spelling pattern. It will be a mixture of
multiple choice and/or a traditional test that
will include dictation of sentences and creation
of sentences using vocabulary words and sentence
rules. Our goal is to see our students spelling
their past and present spelling words correctly
in their writing and daily work.
7Science
- This year in Science, students will be learning
about - Rocks and Minerals (Fossils and Soil)
- Habitats of Georgia, Pollution and Conservation
- Exploring Energy through Heat energy and magnets
- We will be able to go on a couple
- of field trips this year designed to
- reinforce concepts studied in Science
- and Social Studies.
8Social Studies
- Social Studies will begin this year with a unit
on land forms and maps. Later in the school year
we will move into units on Economics,
Communities, Government/Georgia History, Georgia
and U.S. symbols. We will also study several
important figures in history who helped shape our
country.
9Accelerated Reader (AR)
- Accelerated Reader is a program in which
students read books and then take tests on the
computer to measure their comprehension of what
they have read. In third grade, we have set a
goal of 9 AR points or 9 books read per 9 week
period. Students are allowed to take AR tests on
stories we have read in class and books that they
choose themselves. In order for the points to
count, the book must be within their reading
range. Students reading ranges were sent home a
few weeks ago in a report called the STAR test.
Students are given time each week for AR tests in
the classroom. Remember, children who read
frequently do better in all subjects!
10Classroom Discipline
- At the beginning of the school year, students
were ask to participate in creating rules and
consequences for our classroom. So far, we have
had very little need for our consequences in
class because our behavior has been outstanding.
However, if the need arises, we have a card
system in place. Here is how it works - Each day students arrive on green.
- A warning will result in moving your card to
yellow. - A second request for compliance will result in a
card moved to orange 10 minutes recess taken away
with a wisdom walk. - A third request for compliance will result in a
card moved to red and all of recess taken away,
with a wisdom walk. - A final request will result in a card moved to
black and a phone call to your parents. - As stated before, we have had very little need
for our system. We have excellent rule followers
in our class!
11Other Points of Interest

and turning in all homework assignments on the
day it is due. Homework is viewed as an
extension of the days lesson and will therefore
be viewed as additional practice. For this
reason, homework will not be assigned a grade.
Homework is either checked in class or by the
teacher for understanding. We use this as a
guide to move ahead or re-teach if necessary. - Remember practice makes perfect and homework is
