Goal
  • Accurately map all the street lights in the City
    of Minneapolis.

Daily Procedure
  • Obtain as-built or drawings of area to be
    surveyed from office.
  • Head to a known survey control point to
    collaborate coordinates
  • Move to area of work to start collecting data
  • At the end of the week, download data into GIS
    software

Equipment Used
This type of GPS unit uses two parts, a receiver
and a data collector

Technological Process
  • The receiver calculates coordinates using
    satellites
  • The data collector averages and stores those
    points
  • Downloading into the system allows us to view the
    GIS over given maps

Results
  • Successfully surveyed remaining streetlights in
    the city in year 2
  • Averaged approximately 165 lights per day
  • Completed mapping of all street lights in
    Minneapolis, and is now in the process of being
    imported into GIS
