Underlying issues that family may be facing
  • Rob tiredness, affected relationship with wife,
    anxiety and financial concerns.
  • Gina Fear for new babys health, lack of
    support, anxiety and depression, stress,
    loneliness.
  • Thomas New school, loss of friends, new and
    unfamiliar surroundings, new health team to adapt
    to.
  • Claire lack of attention from mother and same
    relocation issues as Thomas, i.e. school.

  • Difficulties that Thomas may have
  • Development communication difficulties may
    impaire development.
  • Normal developmental landmarks not reached may
    be difficult for family to accept
    psychologically.
  • Functional ability Lack of independence
    walking/sitting balance, self care productivity
    and leisure may need support.
  • Lifestyle Restricted in play in relation
    to other children of his age, may not be able to
    attend mainstream school.
  • Other professionals and agencies involved.
  • Dietician, speech and language therapist,
    physio, OT, education board, GP, social services.
  • Advantages of Thomas attending a specialist
    school. Higher staff ratio, specific equipment
    for extra needs, staff and children would be more
    understanding of his needs.
  • Disadvantages Stigma for Thomas and family, may
    be treated differently
  • Advantages of attending mainstream school- may
    feel less different to other children by
    attending the same school, Social inclusion, may
    raise awareness of condition with other children.
  • Necessities for Thomas to attend mainstream
    school educate teachers and children of his
    needs, ensure support for Thomas and teacher,
    environment must support his physical needs with
    appropriate equipment available and work must be
    gauged at an appropriate academic level.

Gina and family
  • What might happen to family Changes in
    relationships with family members. Gina may be
    less able to look after baby if she is stressed.
    Other children affected, Robs stress levels may
    increase.
  • Perception of families needs
  • Short term Medication for Gina, find out why
    Claire is truanting, arrange family support and
    respite for Thomas
  • Medium Find out what would help Gina, Develop
    longer term support structure, work on issues
    with children. Consider Thomass schooling.
  • Long term restore relationships within family,
    maintain good mental health for Gina. Contented
    children.
  • What would other professionals/ agencies be able
    to offer in terms of intervention - Speech and
    language therapist, dietician and physio (would
    help with Thomas as discussed on previous slide.)
    Midwife would support Gina and new baby. O.T.
    could work with Gina to restore balance in her
    life. G.P. could keep overview of family.
    Community mental health team if Gina didnt
    improve. Social worker to counsel and arrange
    benefits and community support. Education board
    to help with children's school needs, community
    support groups.
  • Advantages of MDT Comprehensive service, more
    support than just one agency, all families needs
    will be addressed.
  • Disadvantages multiple assessments, overlap, may
    slip through net, overload of appointments.
  • Factors that promote an affective MDT -
    Communication, clarity of goals, understanding of
    each others roles.
