When light strikes an object

• When light strikes an object 3 things can happen
• The light can be reflected
• The light can be absorbed
• The light can be transmitted

Opaque

• Most objects reflect or absorb light.
• A material that reflects or absorbs all of the
  light that strikes it is opaque.
• Most objects are opaque.
• You cant see through opaque objects because
  light cannot pass through them.

Transparent

• A transparent material transmits light.
• When light strikes a transparent object, it
  passes right through, allowing you to see what is
  on the other side.

Translucent

• Materials that allow some light to pass through.
• Translucent materials scatter light as it passes
  through.
• You can usually tell that there is something
  behind a translucent object, but you cannot see
  details clearly.

Regular Reflection

• Remember The angle of incidence equals the angle
  of reflection
• Regular reflection occurs when parallel rays of
  light hit a smooth surface. All the rays are
  reflected at the SAME angle.

Diffuse Reflection

• When parallel rays of light hit a bumpy, or
  uneven, surface, diffuse reflection occurs.
• Each ray obeys the law of reflection, but since
  each ray hits the surface at a different angle,
  the rays are reflected at different angles.

Color

• You see an object as the color of light it
  reflects.
• A banana is yellow because it absorbs all the
  colors of the spectrum except for yellow. Yellow
  is reflected to your eyes and you see the banana
  as yellow.

• White light has all of these colors.
