Title: P1622 Standard for Voting Equipment Electronic Data Interchange

1
P1622 - Standard for Voting Equipment Electronic
Data Interchange
  • October, 2003
  • Austin, TX

2
Recap - Scope
  • Scope is a Logical View of all Voting Data
  • Municipality/Jurisdictional Information
  • Contest Relationships
  • Other Voting Registration (VR) Systems Info
  • Other reporting informational attributes

3
Recap Process to Achieve Results
  • Define the scope (done)
  • Define the deliverables (done next slide)
  • Define the process to get to the deliverables
  • I - Survey Phase (Discover)
  • II - Data Modeling Phase (Represent)
  • III - EDI Phase (Data Interchange)
  • Publish Results!

4
Recap Deliverables for a common base
  • Voting Data Logical Model, includes
  • Entities (major data groupings)
  • Attributes (data associated with entities)
  • Relationships between entities, defined by
  • Cardinality (1 to 1, 1 to many, or many to many)
  • Optionality/Modality (required/optional
  • Data Dictionary, Synonyms (help everyone speak
    the same language)
  • Voting System Data Interchange Model
  • High Level Flow
  • Electronic Data Interchange Standard

5
Recap Initial Activities to be Done
  • Need to fill the task group roles
  • Vice Chair (meeting moderator)
  • Secretary (web master, minutes posted to web)
  • Technical Editor (terminologist)
  • Working Group to do modeling no one has
    volunteered to participate (need 8-10)
  • Initial Focus will be on data survey of the
    Public Body of Knowledge

6
Survey Phase I (Discovery)
  • Identify all relevant data sources/collections
  • Research current models available
  • Share data representations
  • perform model comparison
  • Build repository of data terminology (data
    dictionary structure to be determined)
  • Steps 1 2 currently underway (status?)

7
Data Modeling Phase II (Represent)
  • Define Data Entities / groupings of data (in
    progress)
  • Define the relationships between the data
entities and the usage of the entities
  • Flush out the attributes for each entity,
    accounting for the terminology variances
  • Create draft model and data dictionary
  • Validate model at state/local levels

8
EDI Phase (Data Interchange)
  • Define context model for voting systems and their
    boundaries
  • Define data interchange points within this
    context (Hart presentation ballot XML)
  • Identify the data exchange elements and map them
back to the logical data views
  • Validate this model draft with vendors and at
    state election levels

9
Publish Results
  • Submit results for IEEE vote / approval
  • (see deliverables slide previously)
  • Submit approved results to standards body for
    review and approval
  • Publish approved results and submit to ANSI and
    ISO for approval
  • Question do we work any of the pieces in a
    different order?
