RAIN WATER HARVESTING
  • INTRODUCTION
  • Water is essential not only for our existence but
for all the animals and plants on this universe.
  • WATER IS REQUIRED TO MANAGE FOOD PRODUCTION,
INDUSTRIAL OUTPUT AND THE URBAN LIFE STYLE.
  • WATER its source is limited by RAIN.
  • Modernization Industrialization has brought
    fast depletion in Water Table.
  • But Who is to be blamed for this fresh water
    crisis ?

5
RAIN WATER HARVESTING
  • Contd..
  • Then what is the SOLUTION ?
  • So it is important to CONSERVE this RAIN WATER in
    the most efficient way.
  • THIS IS WHAT IS CALLED RAIN WATER HARVESTING
    - THOSE WHO HAVE UNDER STOOD THE PRINCIPLE
IMPORTANCE OF THIS HAVE MADE SEVERAL INNOVATIONS
    EXPERIMENTATION USING THEIR COMMON SENCE.
  • ACCORDING TO THE REQUIREMENT / PURPOSE ALSO
PLACE, THE DESIGN OF R W H WILL VARY ie., the
site that commends the pattern and not any
    tailor made design

6
RAIN WATER HARVESTING
  • THIS CONSEPT IS NOT A NEW ONE.
  • R W H CAN BE BROADLY DIVIDED INTO TWO ONE IS
RELEVENT TO RURAL AREAS THE OTHER TO URBAN
    AREAS.
  • THE LOSS IN CATCHMENT AREA DUE TO MODERNISATION
    INDUSTRIALISATION MAY BE COMPENSATED BY
ABUNDANTLY AVAILABLE IN THE FORM OF OPEN
TERRACES and OPEN GROUNDS IN URBAN SUBURBAN
AREAS AS CATCHMENT AREA FOR OUR R W H.
  • BASED ON THE ABOVE PRINCIPLE THIS MAY FURTHER BE
    BROADLY CLASSIFIED AS UNDER -
  • ROOF TOP HARVESTING.
  • SURFACE RUN-OFF HARVESTING.
  • FOR RECHARGING OF SOIL.

RAIN WATER IS GOLD PRESERVE THIS , REUSE
THIS INVALUABLE TREASURE
7
Rain water harvesting (RWH)
  • What is RAIN WATER HARVESTING ?
  • TO CONSERVE RAIN WATER DURING MONSOON.
  • TO ARREST GROUND WATER DECLINE AND IMPROVE GROUND
    WATER LEVELS AVAILABILITY.

IN OTHER WORDS IT IS SIMPLY A PROCESS OF
COLLECTING AND STORING WATER FROM RAIN FOR
LATTER USE.

Rain water harvesting
  • Basic Principles
  • The Rainwater from the ROOF is collected and it
is directed either to a Sump / Open Well /
Bore Well / Recharge Well through a Filter or to
    Percolation Pits.
  • The nature of Rain Water Harvesting Structures
their Design Parameters remain the same for any
Building except the physical Scale (Size) and no.
of Structures which may vary corresponding to the
    size of the catchment.

10
Rain water harvesting
  • Contd..
  • The Recharge of Open Well / Bore Well is done
    through Recharge Pit.
  • The Bore Well is recharged by any of the below
    methods -
  • Rain Water Harvesting is more a SITE SPECIFIC.
  • Indirect Recharging
  • Direct Recharging
  • Through Percolation Pits

ABOUT THE PROJECT
IN THIS CASE STUDY A TINY R W H PROJECT IS
FOCUSSED ON HOW R W H IS MADE FROM ROOF TOP IN
URBAN AREAS. THE IDEAS AND PRINCIPLES ARE
UNIVERSAL AND SIMPLE. THE IMPORTANT COMPONENTS OF
R W H IN URBAN AREAS IS ROOF TOP. THE PROJECT IS
LOCATED IN CHIKMAGALUR TOWN. THE AREA IS
CHARACTERISED BY AN ANNUAL RAIN FALL OF 500mm TO
1000mm. THE TABLE / GRAPH BELOW GIVES THE MONTHLY
DISTRIBUTION OF RAIN FALL FOR THE YEAR 2003
2004.

COLLECTION OF RAIN WATER
S U B D I V I S I O N C K M
  • THERE ARE 3 BLOCKS OF 12 SI QUARTERS TAKING ON
AN AVERAGE OF 5 MEMBERS IN EACH QUARTERS, NEARLY
60 MEMBERS RESIDE IN THE SAID QUARTERS AND THEY
SOLELY DEPEND ON THE BORE WELL TO MEET THEIR
    DAILY REQUIREMENT.
  • RAIN WATER FALLING ON THIS ROOF TOP / TERRACE OF
THESE 3 BLOCKS HAVING A TOTAL AREA OF 290 Sqm IS
MADE TO PASS THROUGH THE FILTERING UNIT AND THE
BOREWELL IS RECHARGED THROUGH A RECHARGE PIT IN
THE VICINITY OF THE BORE WELL.

WATER HAS NO SUBSTITUTE.

  • PRECAUTIONS -
  • DEMANDS RELATIVELY CLEAN ROOF.
  • NOT TO STOREJUNK OR WASTE MATERIAL ON ROOF.
  • BROOM IT CLEAN ESPECIALLY DURING THE RAINY DAYS.
  • FIRST RAIN SEPARATOR MAY BE PROVIDED.
  • FILTRATION IS RECOMMENDED.
  • THE HEIGHT OF THE R W H STRUCTURES TO BE RAISED A
    LITTLE ABOVE THE GROUND.
  • TO HAVE BETTER RESULTS, ALL THE R W H STRUCTURES
SHOULD BE KEPT CLEAN THE TOP OF THE FILTER
CHAMBER RECHARGE PIT IS COVERED WITH SLAB.
