His Explorations
  • In 1674 La Salle was sent to Franceas Frontenacs
representative to justify the building of the
    fort.
  • His mission was successful and he received a
    patent of nobility.
  • In 1684 he sailed from France with a fleet of 4
ships to establish a colony at the mouth of the
    Mississippi River.
  • During that journey they made a mistake and in
1678 he set out from Canada with a crew of 17 men
to procure help for the few members of the
    original expedition.
  • His men mutinied, however, and he was shot near
the Trinity River on March 19,1687.
  • The men who survived the mutiny landed on the
Texas shore, probably on the Lavaca Bay.
