Title: Initial Application Selection for VII Test Beds
1Initial Application Selection for VII Test Beds
- ITS-M Annual Conference
- Ralph Robinson
- VII Consortium
- June, 2006
2VII Program on Track
- VII Program proceeding as planned
- 2008 VII decision date
- 2010/11 VII Deployment opportunity
- VIIC is launching initial work to deploy a
Proof-of-concept system in 2007 - Many active partners including MDOT and BAH
- Expect 20 40 vehicles evaluating 9 applications

6Key Use Cases
- Electronic Brake Light Warning
- Signal Violation Warning
- In-Vehicle Signage
- Dynamic Traffic Information
- Roadway Conditions (weather and potholes)
- Traffic Management and Control
- Alternative Route Guidance
- Payment Transactions (tolls, gasoline, parking)
- Provisioning and Security management
7POC Applications Selected
- The selected applications are proposed for
Proof-of-Concept test bed deployment - Likely the first VII production applications
- Applications support diverse interests (safety,
mobility and consumer) - System provides good test coverage
- Important to have near term benefits even without
high populations of VII equipped vehicles - Diverse applications mix to determine reliable
performance under concurrent or interleaved
application operation
8POC Applications Selected (cont.)
- The proposed POC applications are the starting
points for evaluation of initial production
deployments - Other applications may be added as resources or
priorities become identified - Individual VIIC members may vary the set they
support based on internal needs - Only the common, non-competitive components of
these UCs will be jointly developed
9Initial Test Bed Scope
10System Testing
- The VII vehicle fleet testing will start locally
and grow to sizable fleets and infrastructure
deployments over the next 3 years - Initial Proof-of-Concept in S.E. Michigan
- Future FOTs in CA, FL, MN and potentially others
- These fleets should serve to satisfy the various
stakeholder deployment decision criteria
including - Confirmation that the VII system functionally
works as specified, - Demonstrate suppliers capability to build and
install - Implementation confirms business case assumptions
- The deployed fleet applications provide business
value to the stakeholders and/or driver benefits
over the course of the deployment period
11Next Steps
- VIIC is preparing the Application Work Order for
submission to USDOT partnership this month - Deploy SE Michigan Test Bed
- Partners include MDOT, CAMP and USDOT
- Demonstration of the selected applications will
be shown mid-year, 2007
