Occupational Safety Health Administration
  • OSHA
  • Established in 1970
  • Established standards for an employer to follow
that govern occupational exposure to blood borne
    pathogens
  • Guidelines were developed to protect the health
care provider the patient against blood borne
    pathogens
  • http//www.osha.gov/

3
Establishing an Exposure Plan
  • Important to develop carry out a blood borne
    pathogen exposure control plan
  • NATA has established specific guidelines for
    athletic trainers
  • http//www.nata.org/publications/otherpub/bloodpat
    hogens.htm
  • Plan should include counseling, education,
volunteer testing, management of bodily fluids

Universal Precautions for the Athletic Environment
  • As mandated by NCAA USOC, open wounds or other
skin lesions considered a risk for disease
transmission should be given aggressive treatment
  • Take care against possible transmission of AIDS,
    HIV, HBV.
  • Always take precautionary measures. Glove up!
  • All open wounds or lesions must be covered with a
fixed dressing before practice or competition.
  • Athletes with active bleeding must be removed
ASAP return only when OKd by medical staff.

5
Universal Precautions for the Athletic Environment

    before returning to participation.
  • Protective equipment must be used when there is a
potential for contact with blood borne pathogens.
  • Infectious waste/Biohazard material (gauze,
dressings, tissues, towels, gloves, sharps, etc.)
    must be disposed of properly.

Appropriate Medical Coverage for Intercollegiate
Athletics (AMCIA)
  • Task Force created in 1998
  • Comprised of ATCs representing all competitive
levels (NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, and
NJCAA), including members from the College
    Athletic Trainers' Society, NATA College
    University Athletic Trainers Committee, NATA
Pronouncements Committee, the NCAA Committee on
    Competitive Safeguards Medical Aspects of
    Sports.
  • Recommendations guidelines established by NATA
Task Force, March 2000, revised May 2003

  • Why developed 2 trends in athletics
  • Major change in college athletics itself over the
    past two decades
  • There are more teams, more non-traditional
    seasons, more strength conditioning sessions
(more events, practices workouts where injuries
    occur).
  • Legal trend
  • Lawsuits have shifted away from equipment
manufacturers their duty to warn toward the
health care delivery process. Universities are
sued over whether they have properly trained
health care professionals, they have enough of
them, the health care providers have adequate
plans to follow, they keep proper records,
whether they deliver proper treatment as a
    result.
