Definition of key terms

your team to give the definition.
  • What does to know a language mean?
  • - Sound system
  • - Grammar
  • - Pragmatics (use appropriately)

12
The properties of language (Yule, 1985)
  • 1. Arbitrariness. There is no natural
connection between a linguistic form and its
    meaning.
  • 2. Productivity. The potential number of
utterances in any human language is infinite. We
use our linguistic resources to produce new
    expressions and new sentences.

13
The properties of language (cont.)
  • 3. Displacement. The ability to refer to past or
future time, and to other locations.
  • 4. Cultural transmission. Language is passed on
from one generation to the next generation.

14
The properties of language (Cont.)
  • 5. Discreteness. The sounds used in language are
meaningfully distinct. E.g. bin and pin have
different meaning because of the difference
between b and p sound in English.
  • 6. Duality. Language is organized at two levels
or layers simultaneously. E.g. nib and bin, at
one level we have distinct sounds, and at another
    level we have distinct meanings.

15
Language Acquisition
  • The process by which a child acquires its
    mother tongue.
  • L1 first language or mother tongue
  • L2 sencond languge
  • IL Interlanguage
  • Now, think about how do we learn our mother
tongue (Thai). Discuss with your team and write
    it down.
