Rules of Thumb

• 360 degrees in a circle
• 1 degree of latitude always equals 60 nautical
  miles (or about 110 km)
• 1 degree of longitude is variable
• 60 nm at equator
• Nothing at poles
• Therefore, in measuring distances, use the
  latitude axis (at the latitude where you are
  working)
