Title: Tritium Removal Facility
1Tritium Removal Facility CNE Cernavoda
ROMANIA Present status and perspectives
The 14-th Conference Progress in Cryogenics and
Isotopes Separation 29-31 OCTOBER,
2008 CALIMANESTI - CACIULATA, VALCEA
2Short history
- 2006/2007 final approval for pre and
feasibility study rev 3 - Technology adopted LPCE CD similar in
Wolsung, Korea and ICIT, Romania - Proposed 5 year project for construction
2007-2012 - Solution adopted by CNE Cernavoda 2 year design
phase - MPA no 613 issued by CNE Cernavoda and approved
by CNCAN in August 2007 - Contract signed in December 2007

10Milestones
- Background
- 2 year design contract
- Licensing process 3 licenses has to be obtained
(location, construct construction) - Technical project as support for construction
license - Detailed design project of CTRF
11Milestones
- Technical project part 1 December 2008
- Technical project part 2 March 2009
- Final review of TP and initial SAR April/May
2009 - PSAR October 2009
- License for construction/construct of CTRF
December 2009 - Detailed design of CTRF (DDRP) in order to close
MPA December 2009
12Schedule
13Issues regarding CTRF project
- Change of participants
- AECL is not allowed at this moment to provide
support because of bilateral agreement between
Romania and Canada or EURATOM Canada - Interface with CNE Cernavoda
- Hard communication
- Delays in answering
- ICSI take decision to open an office in CNE
Cernavoda in order to increase information
exchange - Changed solutions
- There are some identified changes between
feasibility study and actual phase regarding the
links with U1 (electrical, construction)
increase the number of systems
14Results
- Licensing
- Initial documents for starting licensing process
were issued - Code and standards, LBD, list of CTRF systems
after FS, system classification list - CU license (from local authorities) approved in
October 2008 after 3 month - Environment initial documents
- Continuous discussion with CNCAN
- ISAR and PSAR content agreed with CNCAN
15Results
- Technology
- All technological or auxiliary systems starts
- LPCE system final configuration
- CD system final configuration including
solution for helium refrigeration unit - Interface systems (HWFS HWPS) final
configuration. Connecting points with U1 systems
identified - Others (HVAC, ADS, TRS, TGHSS, VTMS) ongoing to
finalize solution - Conceptual project in development in order to
review the feasibility study
16Results
- Construction
- Building freeze in October 2008
- Changed solution as requested by CNE Cernavoda
panels instead concrete for walls - Location of systems and main equipment
- Seismically solution for CTRF building developed
by SITON low cost for equipment - Technical channel between service building
there is additional work, will be 2 TC, and we do
not have an agreement about the link with U2

19Perspectives
- Technical project, licensing process and detailed
design for CTRF can be finalized on schedule - Delays expected in licensing process
- As result of TP CTRF construction costs can
increase take in account market prices CTRF
price will be adjusted - Some issues regarding heavy water management
U1/U2 can affect CTRF project and in
perspective the construction of facility CNE
Cernavoda has to define how the CTRF will serve
U1/U2 - Tritium aspects a strategy has to be developed
20Perspectives
Korea Wolsung TRF
Canada Darlington TRF
European Union ICIT TRF, Romania CTRF, Romania
TRITIUM REMOVAL FACILITIES MAP
21Tritium Removal Facilities in Romania
ICSI TRF research training
CERNAVODA TRF commercial
22Tritium inventory in the world
? 2.5 Kg/year tritium in 20 CANDU units (Ontario
OPG) ? Tritium removal facility in Wolsung (4
CANDU units) in operation ? Cernavoda TRF for U1
U2 ?
23Recovery of investment
- Tritium price on market 23 Euro/Ci
- At start of Cernavoda tritium removal facility
tritium activity will be 54 Ci/kg (if CTRF
proceed as schedule in FS) - Scope of CTRF target of 10 Ci/kg in first two
years can be stored 107 Ci meaning 23 107
Euro - After target achieved can be recovered 4.5
Ci/kg per year tritium production per year and
unit of 106 Ci equivalent with 23 106
Euro/unit/year
24Conclusions
- Romanian and international technologies applied
for CTRF - Great effort !
- CTRF schedule can be adjusted
- Results from project skills developed inside
project companies in perspectives of ITER
construction - Romanian industry can be prepared for CTRF ITER
construction - In perspective CTRF has two major advantages
- CNE Cernavoda will be major player on European
tritium market. Romania is EU member! - CTRF experience can be used for ITER
- As things going in ITER project, CTRF will be
build before ITER, so contracts related to
tritium for ITER should be in place next years
25- Thank You Very Much for Attention!
