2
What is an Engineer?
Engineers apply science and technology to
develop solutions to practical
problemsproblems that need to be solved for the
benefit of humanity.
3
ABET Definition
Engineering is the profession in which a
knowledge of the mathematical and natural
sciences, gained by study, experience, and
practice, is applied with judgment to develop
ways to utilize, economically, the materials
and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind
4
Working Definition
Engineering as an activity An innovative and
methodical application of scientific knowledge
and technology to produce a device, system or
process, which is intended to satisfy human needs.
5
Are Engineers Inventors?
  • Inventors
  • Seek to develop a new idea
  • Do not necessarily apply scientific knowledge and
    follow methodical approach
  • Engineers
  • Seek to solve a specific technical problem
  • Always applies scientific knowledge and follows
    methodical approach

Many engineers are also inventors
6
Attributes of an Engineer
  • Problem solving skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Highly ethical and professional behavior
  • An open mind and positive attitude
  • Proficiency in math and science
  • Technical skills
  • Motivation to continue learning
  • Knowledge of business strategies and management
    practices
  • Computer literacy
  • Understanding of world affairs and cultures

7
Engineering Design Process
Needs Assessment
Implementation
Iteration
Problem Formulation
Analysis
Abstraction And Synthesis
8
Needs Assessment
  • Identify the objective(s)
  • Identify who will benefit from the solution
  • Begin with the end in mind know where you are
    going.

9
Problem Formulation
  • Define problem in terms of Design Goals
  • Check your premises
  • Structure search for solution many different
    solutions
  • Acquire necessary technical knowledge
  • Identify design specs
  • Identify resources (time, money, personnel)
  • Prioritize design goals

10
Abstraction and Synthesis
  • Develop conceptual solutions
  • Generate detailed alternative solutions

Be creative
11
Analysis
  • Compare and evaluate alternative designs
  • Establish objective evaluation criteria
  • Eliminate poor alternatives
  • Select best design

12
Implementation
  • Develop final solution
  • Obtain feedback for next-generation design

Stakeholder Input
13
Nth Generation Design
  • There is no such thing as a perfect solution to
    an engineering problem
  • The search for a better Nth-generation design
solution to a problem may continue endlessly

14
Current Practices in Engineering Design
  • Life-cycle design
  • Design for manufacture and assembly
  • Design for quality
  • Faster design cycles
  • Engineering without walls
  • Design for export
