PBS KIDS Share a Story is a national literacy
campaign designed to inspire adults to help
millions of children develop language and
literacy skills through daily activities,
including book reading, drawing, storytelling,
rhyming and singing.Literacy experts have long
recognized the link between children's exposure
to language and their eventual reading success.
The PBS KIDS Share a Story campaign aims to
demonstrate how any caring adult can help raise a
child's reading achievement.

Under its entertaining surface, each episode
depicts key elements of skillful language use --

thinking, and investigating. In fact, the whole
series takes its inspiration from Americas
national literacy standards, as enunciated by the
National Council of Teachers of English and the

The ARTHUR Web site is the online companion to
the popular ARTHUR television series airing daily
on PBS Kids. Like the show, the site targets kids
between the ages of four and eight. It supports
the same educational goals as the program
literacy and the modeling of positive social and
problem-solving skills.

Computer coloring increases the level of
difficulty associated with coloring. Because
online coloring requires a higher level of mouse
control, this activity helps develop finer motor
skills. What's Wrong? The objective of this game
to find all of the things wrong in the picture.
Users have to use their sense of reason to
determine what does and doesn't belong in each
scene. The activity also promotes concentration
and rewards the player when they find all of the
wrong items in the pictures.

The site targets kids ages four and five, though
many of its activities and resources can be used
with kids who are younger and older. Like the
show, the goal of the Web site is to inspire
children to explore science, engineering, and
math in the world around them. Games on the
CURIOUS GEORGE Web site are designed to help your
child play independently. Many of the games on
this Web site are self-leveling.

CYBERCHASE teaches kids that math is everywhere,
everyone can be good at it, and it's
fun! Activities support numbers operations,
angles geometry, budgeting, estimation,
fractions, algebra, bar graphs, using models,
patterns, time keeping, logic, perimeter area,
place value, functions, and line graphs. This is
graphic intensive and might take a while to load
so be patient. Activities are rooted in NCTM
standards.

Our games cover science concepts from biological,
earth, physical, and engineering sciences. They
also encourage kids to assume the role of
scientist using science process skills. Our games
require logical thought, memory, hypothesis
testing and keen attention to details. The games
level up but all start easy. Contextual help is
available throughout each game.

The Electric Company site features five new
games, which focus largely on phonics goals and
incorporate video and characters from the show.
Music Man, Jack Bowser, Combotronic, and Chain
Game all reflect the curriculum goals for the
episode that most recently aired. The fifth game,
Shock's Beatbox, is a free-form self-expression
game that covers most aspects of the show's
phonics curriculum. This site isnt finished yet
but it has some great videos for learning phonics.

Both the site and the television show have been
designed to support English language acquisition
while promoting the value of a culturally diverse
society. The Maya Miguel Web site gives
children the opportunity for open-ended
exploration with language-building activities and
presents a variety of cultures and perspectives
within its activities for children 6-11 years old.

23
This web site has many hands on activities you
can do with preschoolers but there is also a nice
interactive letter recognition area, a
create-a-scene area, and several videos that show
how things are made. Parents are encouraged to
use various areas to spark discussions about how
their child is feeling and also create some
meaningful family time together with their child.

Make Way for Noddy introduces social skills and
core values such as sharing, generosity, honesty
and right from wrong. After each episode parents
and caregivers can reinforce the learning
objectives using examples from everyday life.
Explain to children it is fine to make mistakes
as Noddy does but they must learn from their
mistakes.

In today's world, it is important to learn both
about people like ourselves and people different
from ourselves. In each episode of "Postcards
from Buster," Buster meets kids from all walks of
life kids from different regions, different
religions, different backgrounds... kids with
different interests. And Buster, always curious,
acts as a representative for all viewers.

that help equip children with the skills to
succeed in the world. Topics include healthy
eating, school preparedness, mathematics, and
bilingual learning. Through these initiatives,
Sesame Workshop uses the positive power of the
Sesame Street experience to reach as many
children and families as possible and have
maximum impact on their lives.

The "Sid the Science Kid" Web site is designed to
further develop children's natural wonder and
build a strong foundation for early science
exploration. Complementary online and offline
activities motivate children to practice and
internalize scientific methodology "Observe!
Compare! Contrast! Describe!" The site is
crafted to support a collaborative learning

Uses Comedy to Stimulate Thinking Encourages
Speech The Teletubbies' speech is based on the
first words of children aged one year to 18
months. Encourages Listening Teletubbies "stop
and listen" whenever they hear the narrator.
Teaches through Repetition In Teletubbyland,
things happen again and again, giving a child
time to discover patterns of cause and effect,
allowing a child to anticipate what will happen
next. Promotes AffectionIncreases Confidence
Builds Self-Esteem Children are more engaged by
programs in which they can see themselves,
whether by identifying with characters or with a
situation. In Teletubbies, the inserts of real
children doing real things allow young viewers to
see children like themselves in a variety of
experiences and situations. Encourages Movement
Teletubbies love to dance, jump, stretch, roll
and run. Watching them is not a passive activity
- children like to join in. Teletubbies helps to
promote body awareness and encourages children to
participate in active play. Celebrates
Individuality
"I want children to smile. It they are smiling,
they will be relaxed. If they are relaxed they
will be confident. If they are confident, they
will dare to be curious. If they are curious,
they will grow in understanding." Anne Wood,
Co-Creator of Teletubbies This show is aimed at
2-3 year olds

How is the imagination useful? With it, we can
make an image of something that is not visible to
the eyes! More concretely, it allows us to
"See" what we are being told Grasp the meaning
of a word Propose solutions to a problem
Anticipate the consequences of an action Solve
riddles Make up stories, invent games, etc.

The WordGirl website is specially designed to
promote a love of language and words while
extending the basic principals of The Amazing
Colossal Adventures of WordGirl. The connection
between language and thinking that children gain
by building a broad vocabulary has a direct
impact on their literacy learning, especially
reading comprehension. Our goal is that your
children will find themselves using new words in
daily conversation and develop a love of language.

34
Through its innovative approach of immersing
viewers in a word-rich place, where things spell
out the objects they represent, WordWorld aims to
fascinate children with words and to inspire a
love of words and reading.  Providing constant
opportunity for word play, WordWorld empowers
children as early readers by making the important
connections between letters, sounds, words and
meaning that are necessary for reading.
