IPv6 over 802.16 IPv6CS

  • November 7, 06

2
What the I-D specifies
  • Addressing and Operation of IPv6 over the IPv6
    convergence sublayer of 802.16
  • Recommends the assignment of unique prefix(es)
    for each host
  • Based on a point-to-point link between the host
    and the AR

3
The IPv6 convergence sublayer
  • The 802.16 MAC is connection oriented
  • The CS is a part of the MAC
  • Multiple variants of service specific CS exist
  • IPv6 CS, IPv4 CS and Eth CS are types of Packet
    CS
  • IPv6 runs directly over the 802.16 MAC (I.e over
the IPv6 CS part of the MAC)

IPv6 link
  • On completion of the network entry procedure
    (.16 specific)
  • A transport connection is established between
    the host and BS
  • In case the AR is separate a L2 tunnel mapped to
the transport connection is created between the
    BS and AR
  • The host can now send/receive IP packets (RA/RS,
DHCP, ND) - IPv6 link up

6
Prefix assignment
  • Each MS is on a separate subnet as a result of
the point-to-point link. One or more /64 prefixes
should be assigned to a link which consists of
only an AR and an MS
  • A unique prefix(es) is allocated for a host
  • The prefix is advertised in a Router
Advertisement (RA) message with standard Prefix
    Information Option

7
Neighbor Discovery
  • Neighbor Discovery is performed as per RFC 2461.
  • Router Discovery
  • After host attachment, it may send an RS and an
AR would reply with a suitable RA. Or the AR may
send an RA to the host upon IPv6 link
establishment. The AR may send unsolicited RAs
    periodically.
  • Prefix Discovery
  • Prefix is recommended to be advertised with L-bit
    set to facilitate DNA operation.

8
IPv6 addressing
  • Interface Identifier
  • The MS has a 48-bit MAC address as specified in
802.16. With the MAC address, the MS generates
the 64 bit interface identifier (IID) as per
    RFC2464 for address autoconfiguraiton.
  • For addresses based on privacy extensions, the MS
may generate random IIDs as specified in RFC3041.
  • Duplicate address detection
  • DAD is performed as per RFC2461 and RFC2462.

9
IPv6 addressing
  • Stateless address autoconfiguration is performed
    as per RFC 2461, 2462.
  • Obtaining the IPv6 address through stateful
address autoconfiguration method is as per the
    details in RFC3315

10
WG LC Issues
  • Harmonize terminology with the PS doc
  • Reference to RFC3314 as the precedent to be
modified and the link model discussion referenced
    instead
  • MTU value to be used from RA
  • Reference DNA I-D instead of RFC4135
  • Reference RFC 3633 as a means for obtaining the
    prefixes to be assigned
