Title: Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Annual Prostate Screening

1
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Annual Prostate
Screening
  • Each year, TMH teams up with Southeastern
Urological Center to provide free prostate cancer
screenings to males, ages 40 and up, in the Big
    Bend area.
  • We are making a concerted effort to include as
many African American men as possible in our
    community.
  • For two days, we are anticipating screening over
900 individuals. Assuming these were all African
American males, statistically we would be able to
diagnose 225 cases of men at risk for the
    disease.
  • African American men have the highest rate of
prostate cancer in the world 1 in 4 men.

2
Why Prostate Screening is so Important for
African American Men
  • 1 in 4 African American men is at lifetime risk
    of prostate cancer.
  • African American men have the highest rate of
prostate cancer in the world and are 2.5 times
more likely to die from the disease than
    caucasian men.
  • Your chances are 1 in 3 of getting prostate
cancer with just one close relative having the
    disease.
  • There are no noticeable symptoms of prostate
cancer in the early stages, so screening is
    critical.
  • With screening, 88 of cases in African American
men are now found early In these cases, nearly
100 of these men are still alive five years from
    diagnosis.
  • All prostate cancer statistics are 2007-2008
estimates by the American Cancer Society.
